Sweet Sunday: Churros

Churros, churros, churros. Say that three times fast! Despite their rather, um... phallic appearance, these are worth getting over any Freudian hang-ups and indulging in their hot, deep-fried goodness - and make sure to get some chocolate sauce for dipping!

If you're unfamiliar with these little pleasures, churros are a Spanish treat usually eaten for breakfast. I call them my market treat, because whenever I brave the crowds at nearby Portobello Market, I always make sure to reward myself with a cup full of steaming churros. It's the perfect combo of crispy and chewy.

Happy Sunday everyone!

(A small announcement before I sign off: massive thanks to Alexandra Shostak for putting The Hating Game on Goodreads! If you're on Goodreads and you feel so compelled to add it to your to-read shelf... it would be lovely! Right. Announcement over.)

  1. Yummm!!!! When does your book officially come out?

  2. I know. My stomach is grumbling. Time for a snack!

The book doesn't have an exact date yet, but we're going for Valentine's Day 2011 to have a kind of anti-romance launch! The book has a happy ending but the main character is far from smushy and romantic - she'd bite the head off of any man who tried (in the beginning, anyway!).

  3. Love those fat bombs! Great news about your book. Like the anti-romance, Valentine's approach. Sounds like there could be a trilogy here. Happy Sunday!

  4. They do look phallic you naughty naughty girl. I've had them before but they didn't look likt that. And we used confectioner sugar sprinkled on top not chocolate. Just looking at them I've gained ten pounds.

  5. Oh good lord. Deep fried? They're bound to be delish. Even brown paper bags would be yummy deep fried.

  6. Yum, yum! I am regretting my healthy cereal breakfast now. Lucky you being near a market with tasty exoctic treats like this. The most exciting breakfast place I have nearby is a Swedish bakery and there it's all rye bread and cheese.

  7. Oh these do look nice... I don't think I have ever tried them. Do you dip them in something or eat as is? They look like they need chocolate to me (but that sounds a very gooey breakfast indeed!)

  8. Churros, churros, churros.

I want these freudian slips now!! With chocolate and lots of! :-)

Yay!! You're on Goodreads!!!! And so you should be. With a plateful of these churros, churros, churros.
    :-)
    Take care

  9. Oh, this is not fair. You show us delicious, yummy treats that we can't get. So, please next time have a second cup just for us. :) They do look tasty.

Glad you're on Goodreads. I'll have to spend more time there and get caught up.

  10. ooh, I LOVE churros. Here in the States, you usually find them rolled in cinnamon sugar. But plain and dipped in chocolate sauce sounds like my kind of churros!

I can't wait to get to France and enjoy the Saturday morning market. Culturally speaking, we have nothing in Georgia (USA) that comes close by comparison. The mood, the sights, sounds and smells, the fresh food... *sigh*

    Hope your weekend is awesome!

  11. Churros are best when hot. There's a store that sells them in the bakery cold and they're just nasty.

  12. Nicole - I'm so jealous you're going to France! There is nothing like those French markets - Notting Hill cannot compare.

Christi - Ugh, cold churros. Blergh!

  13. Mmm, churros! I haven't had those in a long time. Have you ever tried them dipped in chocolate?

Based on how you described your main character in your earlier comments, I'm already thinking I'll be able to relate to her! And I like the idea of releasing your book as a sort of "anti-romance launch". Can't wait to read it!

  14. Mmmmm look scrummy, I've never heard of them before, something else to try out!

  15. I usually love churros, but the last one I had (like years ago) tasted so eggy that I almost gagged. Bleggh! I don't like eggs. But I love the cinnamon sugar thing.

Now I'm going to go add the Hating Game to my to read list :)

  16. I've never tried churros! Anything with chocolate dipping sauce has got to be good!

  22. OMG churros and chocolate. In a former life (in the early 80s) I lived in the Canary Islands and LOVED churros and chocolate on the way home to bed at about 6am! Thanks for the reminder. Wonder if you can get them in Dublin!

  23. I've created my to read shelf and added you in. Looking forward to getting this book!
Churros look delicious, and I wish it was only Freud I'd have to put aside to eat these. But 40 something tum revolts at fried foods now. :( Happy long weekend!

  27. Mmmm churros! I love fried dough with sugar sorts of foods (elephant ears, too, are my favorites.)

And it was my pleasure putting The Hating Game on Goodreads! It's one of my favorite websites, and I know books can get a lot of buzz that way. :)

  32. Laura - I saw today that you had added it too; thank you SO much!

And Debs, thank you! You're going to the RNA conference, right? Looking forward to meeting you soon!

And exciting - I'm not sure how but somehow The Hating Game was at 22,000 earlier on Amazon.co.uk (it's better than it sounds!) and it's not even released yet! So thank you SO much to anyone who has pre-ordered!

Thank you for all your comments - you MUST try churros! Yummy yummy.

  42. Churros are very, very sweet and that means they're good for you! I've always loved eating them from a stand on the Santa Monica pier. I just associate them w/ that. Churros & the ocean breeze! :)

  45. The great thing about your cyber-treats is that they have zero calories! The bad thing is that they give me the munchies for the things I do have in my fridge.

Good fortune with your book release. Let me if you find the exact date. Roland
