Ten for Tuesday: Things I Hate About Blogs

As you can tell, this post will be all sweetness and light. Hee!

But before I get to the grump, I want to say thanks to the people who kindly offered to donate books for my epic week of giveaways from March 7-11, in celebration of the paperback launch of The Hating Game! I'll be updating the giveaway list on Friday, so feel free to let me know if you have any books you'd like to add to the giveaway.

You all know I LOVE blogging. But there are some things that make me reach for the wine (again)! I may not get to ten, but here are my top bloggery peeves:

1. If you have more than one blog under your profile, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD make sure your writing one is clearly identified so I don't have to click around aimlessly looking for something writing related.

2. I like funky toolbars and widgets as much as the next computer obsessive, but there are some blogs with so many add-ons that they crash my browser. I'm not joking. It takes me at least five minutes to leave a comment sometimes.

3. LOOONNNNGGGGG extracts of your lovely writing. It might be better than Hemingway, but I really don't have an hour to spend admiring it. (I know that sounds bitchy, I know. I'd like to have an hour to admire it. But I don't.)

4. Pop-up word verification boxes. I hate word verification, but I had to turn it on after spammers started attacking. But those pop-up boxes are the worst, and I can't tell you the number of times I'd already closed the window and moved on before realising... oops! I think the best thing to do is to embed the word verification into the page.

5. Comment links at the top of the post, not the bottom. Now I know this is something that's controlled by the template, but I REALLY hate searching around for the little thing to click to comment! If it's right at the end of the post, that's easy enough...

6. Giant headers. For those of us with Netbooks, this means we have to scroll waaaaay down to reach the post.

7. 'Followers' box half-way down the page. I want to follow you! For goodness sake, don't make me hunt for it!

Hmm, I seem have run out of steam! :)

    Hey Talli! I'm doing Rachael Harrie's blog Crusade at the moment, so I've had occasion to get out there and look at literally hundreds of new blogs I hadn't seen before (discovered and am enjoying yours, too!).

    All the things you identify are the same things driving me crazy out there. I've had to hunt for so many follower boxes it's doing my head in. And the stuff, the awards, the badges- lovely, lovely display of community, but oh my goodness. It can make navigating the clutter so hard.

    Totally agree with you, these are things that bug me too - I love the widgets too but they can makes pages take forever to load if there's too many of them.

    Having said this I wonder how many of these things I'm doing *I better check*.

    Not persnickety at all, I have the same issues. Mostly it's when there's so many photos and other additions that it takes forever for the page to come up.

    Because of you, I've updated my profile page. But I'm with you on those complaints. I try to make it as easy as possible for my readers because that's the point of blogging, so people will read. I am going to work at uncluttering though. I'm probably one of those websites that crash your computer.

    I so agree with you about having to search the comments link all over the page. I've even given up writing a comment because I couldn't find it.
    I'd also suggest people visiting other people's blogs show their blog link on their profile, otherwise you can never return the visit.
    Interesting to see you also have a grumpy side to you.

    Holy Toledo friend you nailed all of my pet peeves!!! You and I have definitely got the same dislikes (let us hope that it doesn't take you 20 minutes to get to my blog).

    I adore your blog and I think what you shared was as helpful as it was opinionated. 100 points for creativity!

    I agree with you Talli! And I've got one more - non-Blogger blogs that force you to sign in to leave a comment. Now, this may be my problem only, because OpenID doesn't seem to want to accept that I own The Girdle of Melian, but it's extremely frustrating.

    Can I put out one more beef? Not trying to be snarky, but I really can't stand others' automatic music players. Put a player on your blog, if you like, but don't let it start playing the moment I click through! For one thing, it slowes everything down, and for another, well, my tastes aren't your tastes...

    Okay, end meanness. For all that, I do love most bloggers' layouts; there are so many gorgeous designs and backgrounds and personalisations out there.

    Now if I could just figure out how to get three columns on my page...

    Know what you mean about followers boxes and those blogs with huge headers (and I use a laptop to browse most of the time)but you've now got me feeling insecure. I'm going to rush to my blog and see if it needs tidying up a bit. Oh yes, and cheers. I can smell it on your breath!

    Biggest bloggery pet peeve? When someone promises a list of ten, but only delivers seven... HA! (Just kidding, of course.)

    My biggest bloggery peeve is having to fill out word verifications. I understand the point, but I just find them to be particularly annoying, especially when I have to try and figure out if something is an "i" or an "l" or what have you.

    My biggest bloggery non-peeve -- "the complete opposite of a peeve," according to Webster's Dictionary (as far as anyone knows...) -- is what you do. I know that if I take some time to leave a (hopefully) funny comment here, you will stop by Ducks and leave one there. I think that is really cool. :)

    (Note: Not that I use this as motivation to comment. As a rule of thumb, I'll say something if I have something to say. If I don't, I won't "force" a comment...)

    I could see the case where long-winded comments could be a bloggery peeve! :)

    Laura - that follower thing drives me mental. Seriously. Once I deliberately didn't follow someone because the thing was at the bottom of the PAGE! Yes, that's petty, I know!

    Andrew - Sadly, yes, people od still blare music automatically. It's okay if you're at home, I guess, but in a public environment... not so good.

    All valid points, Talli! And I completely agree with the followers box. I hate having to search for it, and sometimes, I just give up....surely that's not good!

    I've gotten to the point where I won't even check blogs if I'm using my netbook. Sometimes I still have to scroll a lot, and I have a 24-inch widescreen monitor. :)

    Oooh, can I add one? What about those people who have such 'busy' wallpaper on their blogs that the text is almost unreadable? And, now I'm thinking about it, people who blog in any colour other than black on white or white on black? Lavender on pale pink? Sooo not a good look, when your reader has to squint herself sick to read your pithy prose. And I have to agree particularly with your dislike of people who post long...long...looooong extracts of their writing... Sorry, but I only have so many years left to me, if I want to read your stuff I will seek you out, please don't force it on me!

    You pretty much have all my peeves. My main one is taking so long to load. My computer system is ah "mature" and will take it's own sweet time anyway. It does NOT need any help slowing down. Oh and they have so much going on that I have to search for the post.

    I can't say I disagree with you especially on the word verificiation boxes...if it's there fine, but don't make me almost leave and realize it has popped up!
    The other is not only long posts but two or three subjects on one post...save it for later!
    Now, I must go and make sure my blog has none of your pet peeves!!!

    I guess my blog pet peeve is clicking on what looks like a WRITER blog only to find out that it's entirely devoted to (winning) contests. There's no content other than contests and giveaways. I don't mind if the blog is called "comprehensive lists of contests!" or something because then I'll know, but when I'm clicking on Lucy's Kitten Writing Blog (yeah, just used the name of my cat) then I want to see Lucy talking about kitten writing, not all the contests going on.

    Oops. I'm guilty of at least one of these (the Followers box half way down the page being the most obvious) but I think I agree with you on most of the others.

    What gets my goat is leaving a comment on someone's blog (after spending time reading and typing up said comment - plus faffing around with word verification) for the blog's owner to ignore it. And what's worse is when it's ignored and they've replied to someone (more important) else. That really gets on my wick.

    Hi Talli! Great post. I hate it when I write a whole amazing flow of words and then loose it sometimes. On occasion I will managed to do a copy and paste, just in case, but not always and well, I move on frustrated. I use to always leave my blog address too, but thought some didn't like it so I stopped doing it all the time. So here's mine again.

    I agree with your list (but I hope my giraffe doesn't bother you) and could add my own list as well. Probably just as long. Haha! They cluttery blogs that look like a scrapbook with music playing are my biggest pet peeves.

    Well at last someone with the same peeves as me. I don't know how many times I have left comments and then chanced back only to discover my comment never took! Grrr! And really I hate having to search for comment boxes and the follower’s link. Sometimes if a post is too long I have a tendency to just scan. I hang my head in shame at that one. HeyHo! The other thing I hate that you did not mention, when I click on a new follower to check out their blog a link is not there. All the blogs they follow are but not their one. I have found a number of Crusaders like that. What's a body to do I ask you?!? Ok done now.

    OMG - you've covered so many of my pet hates. Number 2 is the worst. I've lost count of the number of blog posts I've not commented on because the annoying widgets etc keep taking me out of the comment box!

    These are points that I agree with and they are going to be crucial in getting thru more blogs during the A to Z Challenge. A lot of these really slow us down when we are visiting and a lot of us should go thru and tune-up and readjust are blogs so they load faster. I think maybe my blog has a few problems in that respect.
    Good post--I think we'll be hearing more about the issuses from other members of the A to Z Team.

    Talli, I agree and hope I'm not guilty of some of these points, I dont like word verification, but had to put mine on too.
    It probably depends on why you are blogging as well and how many blogs you read, I only read about 7 or 8 now, so I dont mind if the posts are long, if I like the persons writing I will read large extracts, it depends really.
    I agree with Nik's comment, that is so annoying, when you are ignored and it makes you feel that schoolgirl left out feeling, sad but true.

    Good points, Talli! I actually prefer a pop-up window as opposed to an embedded comment box, as it means the page has to load twice - sometimes three times if there's word verification.

    Hi Talli .. I agree with everyone's comments ..

    Pop-up boxes I quite like - as I can move it up and down through the post and answer it properly.

    Funny writing is one no-one has mentioned .. that can be difficult.

    Wordpress do a "Check box to confirm you are NOT a spammer" -

    I hate Wordpress where you have to confirm subscription for the comment left - takes forever ..

    I keep word verification on - because I can really do without 'nasty little peoples' upsetting my apple-cart!

    I need to re-look at my blogspot details .. as it is set in the dark ages, I suspect ..

    Some blogs need different browsers - does anyone else find this?

    Some posts I can't read - but that may be set up my end .. not sure I understand why .. so another thing to check ..

    Those are all legitimate. 4 really slows down my commenting speed. I love short posts like this as well. Long ones I just skim over and comment on random parts of it.

    I agree with you on all points Talli! The ones that get to me the most are #1 and #3 - I do like good writing but like you said when it comes to blogs, we are not looking to read a novel.

    LOL! I kept nodded to each of these. The too many gadgets that make the page take forever to load and can crash my browser really are a pain. As much as I dislike the work verification, I have to use it too. Spammers are just too rampant!

    This is a brilliant post. I completely agree with you; to the extent that I can say I've stopped commenting on some blogs. I just don't have the time and patience to go through all this trouble. It's just like bureaucracy.

    I agree with you too! But I have to admit that sometimes my posts get a little too long; sometimes I get carried away. :) One of my blogging pet peeves is if there is no followers' box at all on the page. I've actually started following blogs by clicking on followers' pictures and checking out their blogs; obviously I can't do that if the followers only show up in the comments section. I suppose I could click on their links through their comments, but still.

    hahhaa, can't believe you ran out of steam, lol. What of those with no follow gadget? Those whose comment box is not working, so that after leaving the comment, there's no way to submit? So frustrating. I generally don't like verifications, I'd rather make sure only registered users can comment and then moderate old comments.

    My peeves are numbers 4 and 5. I know verification is necessary once the spammers discover you, but man are they annoying. Having it embedded like yours is the best option when you have to have it.

    All very reasonable peeves.

    Another of mine is long posts that aren't broken down into paragraphs (not that I'm simple or anything, they just make me switch off) and ones make too many different points in a single post so I don't know which bit to comment on. I haven't time to comment on them all!

    I like a nice clean layout myself. I think my pet peeve is probably the pop-up verification box, because I've done the same thing, too - closed the comment box just a shade too fast, missing the need to add my word verification by a mere hair.

    Also, because I'm not using blogger, I really like it when blogger blogs let me enter just my name and URL, rather than requiring me to be signed in with blogger (I do have an account, but I'm not always signed in when I comment - for example, when I'm on my iPad, I have to sign in and try to remember my password!)

    The biggest blogging peeve I have is someone adds themselves to your followers list, (a) you get back to them only to find they haven't got a blog(b) if they have a blog they haven't written one post for a while and you never hear from them again. Thank goodness for the regulars.

    I agree with you, especially on 1 and 5. I've had to search so many times through personal, photography, cooking, etc. blogs to find the writing blog. A lot of them are interesting, but most of the time I just want the writing one!

    #1 can be problematic especially if someone has several blogs. Another complaint I have is when I get on a blog that has so much advertising on it that I can't locate the comment box! Fortunately, that hasn't happened too often.

    Oh yeah, I agree with you on all of those! But I'm one step farther in that I don't like word verification at all. But as long as it's there in the pop up and I don't think my post has taken because it has to load, I don't mind it as much.

    I think this is my first visit to your blog, how have I missed it? *waves*

    I have trouble with white/light writing on a dark background - it gives me terrible headaches. And it's difficult when some blogs don't have any way for me to follow them.

    I would add another - an adult content warning when there is no adult content. It is a waste of time for me that adds to the frustration of captchas and author verification.

    I hate those word verification boxes, too. Have no idea if one pops up on my blog or not. It's so annoying to wait for the thing to cycle through before you can comment.

    Yes!!! I've come across 2 or 3 lately with no followers box at all. I've scrolled up and down and all over, but no box!

    And the comment thing at the top??? Drives me nuts!

    Word verification boxes test my patience as well...I am not an alien. D: That's why I took mine off, and thankfully the spammers seem to be cutting me slack so far.

    I totally agree about the overuse of widgets + trinkets...there are some blogs that have REALLY good informational/entertaining posts but I don't want to follow because the rest of the page is always so cluttered full of, well, STUFF.

    light writing on dark background ESPECIALLY when I have to highlight to find the darn comment thingy. jeesh. also the letter that comes before M followed by the letter that comes after N followed by the letter that comes before M again and it means you are laughing or something. Euhhhh! don't use it.

    You're right on, sista! I only have so much time to spend blogging and I'm not going to read through the chapter of a book or pan down the page to find the follow.

    Great idea to have a book giveaway with the launch of your book. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the release of mine.

    Definitely not unreasonable, I agree with most of these! I love neat little things and widgets but boy, can it get ridiculous on some blogs!

    One of my pet peeves: annoying blog fonts/colours. Light colour on dark background is fine, dark colour on white background is fine, but when the text is bright blue and in a fancy font with a Latin-sounding name, my eyes just hurt!

    I totally agree. I think there are some blogs that have way too many widgets on their pages. And, I also hate searching for the follower button. It should be up the top because if I have to search for it (especially underneath all those widgets), I probably won't be bothered.

    1. I'm so sorry. Substitute Teacher's Saga is my writing one. Since then I set up Earnest Writer's Excerpts and now I have 70 followers for a blog I rarely post on. All my fault.

    3. I'm at the point I skip long excerpts.

    4. Hate them too. There's not so much spam that anyone has to do this.

    5. Don't like that either.

    What do I hate? Advertisements.
