The Macaron Mandible Mishap

If you've lived in France, you're probably familiar with a little place called Ladurée and their legendary macaron. Sweet and chewy, with a gooey filling (oh, my mouth is filling with saliva), macarons cannot be resisted.

Ladurée has since come to London and its macarons have spread wide and far to many French bakeries across the city. So when my husband's co-worker bought him a dozen flavoured macarons from Paul for his birthday, I did what had to be done. I ate them.

To clarify, I only ate ten. Being the nice wife that I am, I left him two. That's generous, right?

To make matters worse, I was supposedly on a 'detox' -- I'd earlier sworn off bread and other carbs on Twitter, hoping my public statement would fuel my willpower. It didn't. The macarons sang their siren song all the way from kitchen and after the heady taste of just one, I had to go back for more. And more. And more... until only two remained. My logic: the faster they're eaten, the faster I can forget about them and their tempting surgery ways.

How does this relate to writing? It doesn't. But I'm hoping a public confession will ease my guilt and pain at consuming whatever percentage 10/12 represents of my husband's present (yes, my Maths is just that bad). I could buy some more. But since I'd probably eat them too, it's not really worthwhile.

So I appeal to you, my blogging friends near and far: what should I do to make up for this mandible mishap?

  1. *drool* I love them more than s*x. LOVE THEM.

No judgement from me. Only pure understanding.

Except the part about leaving him two.

  2. i've never had a macaron (sadface)
    they look nummy.

  3. I have nothing to say, they are delicious and you were VERY generous leaving him two, you could have easily eaten all of them.

I'm with Lola, I would have probably eaten them more.

    YUM :)

  4. Two Hail Marys and call me in the morning. Or sooner, if you get any macarons in.

  5. Cannot blame you one bit. Steve and I bought a pack of those frozen profiteroles yesterday and left them to defrost. By the time they were ready to be eaten properly, I'd already eaten six.

To make up for your mishap, I suggest you instantly send me some of these macarons. That's the only way you can truly atone.

    :-)

  6. Blame the cat!

I'll admit to doing the same kind of thing though how can it be helped when they call to you? Seriously, you have to listen or there will be consequences ;)

  7. How dare sweets be so tempting. It's all THEIR fault. You can blame them.

  8. The trouble with macarons is you just can't have one,...One more macaron and one less...?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Replace them, but make your husband eat them at work/in the park/not near you?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I blame myself. If I hadn't suggested the cupcake yesterday on twitter you would have been strong. So you can tell him it's my fault. Or you can blame him. "Well what do you expect bringing those home when I've been on a carb fast for two weeks? Of COURSE I'm going to eat them all. Be glad I left you two."

  11. I'm lucky because my husband doesn't like sweets, so I get all of his. :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. What the husband doesn't know won't hurt him! :-) The macarons sound fab!

  13. No judgement from either. You can always tell him you were just looking out for his health. The macarons sound yummy.

  14. Oh dear. This is much the same as the 'how much did it cost?' rule. Always deduct 20%. Except you left him 2 macarons.

I can't offer judgement, as I'd probably have done the same!

  15. It's OK, I have no willpower when it comes to sweets either.

  16. Chocolate. It's the magic fix for anything and everything. Hands down.

  17. Oh the goodness of a macaron. I blame the sugary goodness.

At least you left him two. :)

  18. Mmmmm Macarons. *salivates*

There is nothing wrong with eating 10 of them. In fact, I think you showed tremendous restraint by saving him the final two. ;)

  19. Hmmm...I've never had a macron before. Must find some soon.

If they're that yummy, I don't blame you at all for eating 10. He's lucky you left him two:)

  21. Erm.... Give hubby a nutella sarnie??? Yum!

Oh but that Paul website is to die for!!! Wow!!!

    Take care

  22. I just returned from France but didn't eat any macarons while there. Don't know why. I DID have an amazing Tarte Tatin though(amazing).

  23. I'm always making public confessions and trying so hard to strengthen my willpower. It rarely has much effect.

  24. Convince your hubby that he needs to detox and then let him know you're helping him out by making sure there are NO macroons left. Then no need to feel guilty either!

    ReplyDelete
  25. First, shame on Paul for having a birthday while you were detoxing...

Buy him a couple Flakes to make up for eating the macarons and let him have one of them. :)

    Have a great week!

  26. I have to agree with you. The quicker you eat them the better. Then they are not dogging your psyche all day long. Get rid of the damn things.

  27. Those in glass houses can't throw stones, and I live in a very, very big glass house. I, too, think you did very well to leave any behind. I would have been thinking, 'Hey, they look so messy, just two on a plate' and they would have been snaffled. Thanks for the confession. You make us all feel SO much better.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thank you all for your support... I think! :)

I have just put an apple crisp in the oven (I've never cooked one before but my husband's been begging me to make it) so hopefully that will count as atonement.

  29. I think it was lovely of you to give them to the starving children, who knocked on your door! ☺ lol

  30. I've never had a macaron and I want one IMMEDIATELY.

I did that with the Man's birthday red velvet cake...He had like one slice and then didn't take the cake with him. It was his fault really...

    p.s.
I will accept express shipments of goodies such as macarons and red velvet cake.

  31. What I want to know is how did you have the willpower to leave him two?!

Seriously, I think you did him a favour by clearing the house of them, and he should be thanking you!

Next time you have a similar problem, there do seem to be a few volunteers on here that you could call upon to assist...? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I've never tasted a macaron. They're very colorful and tasty looking.

I have no penance for you. Only praise that you stopped at 10. I'm sure he appreciates that you saved the best two for him.

    Helen

  33. Go buy three dozen and give him the ten you ate - that leaves you with 22 more to consume!
And my wife does that to me all the time...

  34. I count myself fortunate to have eaten (devoured??) those macarons when we were in France two years ago, oh, dear God, too sinful for words! New Orleans also has delicious macarons (burp). I don't normally like sweets, cept when it comes to marzipan and macarons. Actually, Talli, I think it is a testament to how much you love and adore your husband that you left him two (which is double One!)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm only grateful I haven't come across these temptations as no doubt I'd be unable to resist them too.

I think it shows incredible will power to leave your husband two,

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think leaving two was more than generous. It was loving, in fact. Think of the cholesterol and future heart attacks you may be saving him.
However, not even saving me one is inexcusable! How long would you say a flight from Mexico to France is? MUST-EAT-MACAROONS! MEM for short.

  37. Hahahahaha. I love macarons. They're so good. So I don't blame you for eating 10 of them. (Dude, I admire the self-control that allowed you to leave the last 2.)

p.s. calories and carbs don't count when it's a macaron.

    ReplyDelete
  38. That picture is so delectable I may have to cry just looking at it ...

    ReplyDelete
  39. You left him two? That was pretty good of you. Probably better than I would have done. I'd have probably promised a trip for more after I polished off number twelve.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You know, I've never eaten a Macaroon *must add to to list of things to do before i die*

    ReplyDelete
  41. 1) Nobody should lay off carbs. It's just WRONG.
    2) Those macaroons are irresistible. Anyone who has eaten them knows leaving two showed marvelous self-restraint.
    3) Caramels are my favorite.

I don't know you can make it up. Buy another bunch? If you're looking for a G-rated solution, that would be my suggestion.

    ReplyDelete
  42. if it comes to trial, i'm in your corner ;)

    ReplyDelete
  43. See, the problem w/ depriving yourself of something like carbs is that you can only go so long before temptation takes over. & after seeing & reading about those lovely macarons I can understand why you've fallen off the carb wagon.

I haven't tried them for some reason. Maybe because I'd like 'em too much. When I first saw the picture here I thought they were shampoo bars from Lush! :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. That's so funny, and so much like something I'd do. Exercise is the best way to go. I think you should take a long walk.

  45. I've never had a macaron, but they look and sound very tempting. They are made to be eaten, you have merely helped them fulfil their destiny.
As for carbs, you may be able to resist bread and potatoes, but...cake/biscuits, they just don't count :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Blame your husband! He's the one who brought them home from work, right? He should know you'd eat them straight away and feel bad afterwards:) Make him feel bad and maybe he'll buy you some more:)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I use that same logic with chocolate: the faster I eat it the less distracted I will be by the tantalising bar sitting next to me.
I used to live in Switzerland where you could buy Luxembuergli, exactly the same as those macarons in the picture. I used to buy them when friends came to visit. I also tried bringing them home as presents for family but it turns out they don't travel well.

Buy a whole bunch more and split them!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I would eat more of them, personally:)

    ReplyDelete
  50. I won't lie to you i would have eaten all ok perhaps left a few for him and gone back the next day for more. I love Macarons and if you need to detox, locate a Chinese grocery store ask for their green tea called Mega tea does wonders darling x :)

  51. You need a dog or some kids to blame the missing cookies on. You don't even have to say it out loud, everyone will just assume the kids (or dog) did it!

    ReplyDelete
  52. At least they were worth the guilt, right? :D

    ReplyDelete
  53. They look tiny. In fact, they look like a ten minimum kind of dessert.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I would grovel and get him some more - kept out of reach!

    ReplyDelete
  55. What? You dared eat ten macaroons?
    The very thought of it!
In penance, I recommend that you whistle innocently! ; j

On the bright side, it's mostly air... With a bit of yumminess slipped in.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Brilliant. Dont have a sweet tooth but I have jars of nuts and crispy things that definitely shout at me at various times in the day! No guilt! No apologies. You enjoyed them. Good for you! Now where are those peanuts!

    ReplyDelete
  57. No advice, cause I'm addicted to any form of sugar, I just nag myself like, "Hey fatty, why not eat more, fatty. Go ahead fatty, isn't your butt big enough yet fatty?" It works 50% of the time. Oh, and I've had macaroons, but they don't look like that. A macaroon is a coconut cookie.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh, how I love macarons! It's impossible to eat just one so I totally understand! There's this awesome bakery in Montreal called 'La Maison du Macaron' and that's the only thing they make!! I rarely go because I have to take the subway AND the bus to get there. But that picture you posted... it's calling me! ;)

  60. Hi Talli .. they are delicious and I can understand your lack of willpower - I do the same .. except I don't have a husband expecting his share - I just need to get the 'bad' thing into my tummy and go 'yum yum .. I'm enjoying this treat' - then worry about working it off ..

I suppose you could both ride off on one of those bikes .. find the shop - have a wonderful coffee and your hubby could eat macarons to his heart's content?! You could see how you felt?!

    Enjoy the week .. Hilary

  62. You must be the third or maybe fourth blogger that I read who has posted about these famous macaroons. They must be good, although I had never heard of them! Apologies for not commenting much at the moment, having trouble keeping up, but I always read your posts in my blog reader, even if I do not have a minute to comment.
