Ten for Tuesday: Bag Lady

Last the week, the lovely Sangu tagged me to list the contents of my bag. Since they're as much a mystery to me as anyone else, I thought it'd be interesting to have a root through one of them and see just what the heck is in there! I'm way too lazy to clean out my handbags with any kind of consistency so... here goes:

1. An empty packet of Nurofen (ibuprofen). Why empty? Because, like I said, I'm too lazy to throw it out. This packet will provide a false sense of security when I comb through my bag, frantically looking for my fix in the throes of a migraine. I will curse myself, promise to throw it out, and promptly forget all about it. And so it continues.

2. A copy of my P45 from Inland Revenue... from 2006! Yikes. Clearly I'm not organised, as I had no idea this was in here. Nor do I know why!

3. A random roll of sellotape. Hmmm... this could be from when I was a recruiter and I was doing a session at the London School of Economics, and I needed to tape up signs? That would have been three years ago!

4. A memory stick. No idea what's on this one.

5. A membership card to the now-defunct PrimeTime Video store.

6. A receipt for Mango's in Covent Garden, dated 22/0/07. And on the back, written in red pen, directions to a job interview.

7. A receipt for my British Citizenship Test, dated 22/03/2008. I like to collect receipts, clearly. And crikey, that test cost £34!?

8. A letter from my friend Addie in San Francisco, congratulating me on completing my first novel (back in 2008!).

9. Contract of employment for the above-mentioned job interview. *shudder*

10. Four plasters! I had a lot of blisters from my high-heels in those days...

Wow, that has actually been fairly enlightening. And what I have done to get organised? I've chucked it all back in the bag, of course...

I'd like to tag everyone to do this, as it's too hot right now (yes, hot!) to write more. So have fun, everyone, I'm off to get some wine!

  1. Wow that's one full handbag! I won't even post about mine... too scary in there!

  2. Jen, I know! The funny thing is, there's still plenty of room!

  3. i have lots of empty paracetomal and nurofen in my bag too. I dread to think what else is in there!

  4. Jenny, it was actually a fairly interesting expedition! :)

  5. Ha, that's a cool list. I always find plasters and empty pill packets. And normally a really frayed nail file that is incapable of filing anything any more!x

  6. LOL, such random stuff! I like that you have the congratulatory letter still in your bag! That's so sweet.

My purse's items are uninteresting. I'm a neat freak and I don't like big purses, so only necessary items are in there!

  7. Mine's like a D&D Bag of Holding - no telling what I'd find if I dug deep enough.

  8. I need to clean mine out--it's getting heavy. The majority of the content is loose change, 8 different kinds of lip balm/chapstick, gum, pens, and way too many emery boards that spilled out of their container and have yet to be cleaned up.

  9. Isn't it interesting how telling the contents of our bags are? You could write a book based on your contents, building your character more with each one!

  10. I think the size of the bag should also be included. Grandma sized? Teen sized? Toddler sized? ;-)

Me? I don't have a bag. Just a wallet that stays in my car unless I really need it. Weird, I know.

  11. Wow...I've got three magazines, my Kindle, mongo container of ibuprofen, laptop charger cord, a notebook, a pink bandana, five pens and a pencil (broken). Oh, and my wallet.

    This is so much fun!

  12. Too funny! I'm not even going to look in mine. I'm too lazy even for that. ;)

  13. Oh, yes, Justine - I agree. The size of the bag should be indicated! Mine is kind of purse-sized hang-bag... if that makes sense.

And my husband wants me to ask: what is it with women and ibuprofen/ paracetamol? Why do we always carry it?

    I told him: women's issues.

  14. I only use a handbag if I go to a job interview, wedding or funeral.

I normally use a rucksack, which has at least one book in it, mints, keys, phone, purse, iPOD, camera, notebook, pens, and a stuffed toy squirrel, who usually insists on taking a change of clothes with him. You did ask!

  15. Janet - I can relate!

Kath - is this the infamous Squizzy (sorry for the spelling)?

  16. This is why men don't carry a purse.
Okay, one of thousands of reasons.

  17. Alex - Not even a man-purse? Come on, admit it! :)

  18. *snickersnort* Very amusing list! (are plasters like band-aids?) I don't carry a purse, but my backpack (which I cart to work and back to bring lunch and such) ends up like that... badly.

  19. I looked at my bag just now. Broke out in a sweat and closed it in the closet.
Going to get a drink and recover. I can only imagine what would happen if I opened the thing!

    have a fabulous summer :D

  21. I don't have a handbag, but this would be fun if I did.

I love British vocab! I know what sellotape is, though I thought it was cellotape, but what is a plaster?

    ReplyDelete
  22. haha! Very interesting handbag! What? No wallet/purse?

  23. I'm one of those people that can tell you everything in my bag. I go through it almost daily. Actually, I'm more likely to throw away something important than to keep something unimportant.

  24. Paracetamol, just in case; plasters, for the same reason and purse are in mine - as well as what feels like a house brick. My bag is so damn heavy, I really need to clear it out, but I'm sure I'll always need whatever is lurking in there.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Trust me to have actually cleared out mine this morning! I found at least two name tags from events I attended a year ago in there....

    ReplyDelete
  26. LOL--girl, I don't even want to KNOW what's in the bottom of my handbag. Or stuffed into my wallet. Or, worst of all, shoved under my bed. *shudder*

But I loved your list. Very enlightening. :)

  27. It's time to clean out your bag, Talli!

I rotate bags on a pretty regular basis + I just cleaned mine out from the trip, so I don't have anything exiting. I will admit when I switch bags, I leave all the junk I don't want in it as it sits on a shelf, only to have to tidy up the bag when I use it again.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Weird what you can carry around with you, isn't it. I have a pile of old handbags each with their own collection of outdated debris. My current handbag has only been in service for two weeks so it's still amazingly light and empty... for the time being!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ha, the one about Nurofen cracked me up!

As weird as it may sound, I don't actually own any handbags/purses. I just carry around a messenger bag or do what men do and just keep my cell phone and cash on me.

  30. Congrats on your first novel! Ah, late is better than never.

Blisters from wearing high heels? You know whoever creates women's fashions must hate women. Have you ever read of the torture devises called corsets that Victorian society forced women to wear?

As always, I enjoyed your post, Roland

  31. Talli, whatever is a plaster??

  32. I love No. 4, a memory stick you can't remember the contents of. Doncha just love the way technology makes life so ironic?

  33. I think my bag is entirely full of gum wrappers. But the other day I DID open up a suitcase because I needed to use it and I found several shirts and a bra I thought I'd lost forever--because I hadn't unpacked it from a trip I took last summer. :-P

  34. I guess you like to save things! You've done a lot of writing since 2008--I'm impressed to read that.

I recall you wrote about how cold it was a few days ago. Glad summer's visiting you again.

Stay cool - have ice cream.

  35. Awwww it is so ESSENTIAL to have things in one's bag. A bag is not a bag without things in them!! One must always have bits of things in bags - that;s why we have bags!! Bags to put stuff in. Bags are life and just just x-mas pressies although they're very nice to give to me thank you.

p.s I think I ought to lay off the medication and join you with the wine drinking!!
pps. YAY!!!!! FINALLY, tis HOT!! Tis the summer!!! The shiny thing in the sky has finally arrived!!
ppps. Congratulations on being tagged!! :-)

    Take care
    x

  36. I hate cleaning out purses! I shudder to think what's in the bottom :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Interesting list of stuff in there. I won't even try to figure out what's in mine. I just blindly reach in for my wallet since that's the only thing my kids are interested in seeing. :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I tend to keep receipts as well - for anything from major purchases to ones for a pack of gum. It's a terrible habit and I really need to learn to throw them out.

    ReplyDelete
  39. This reminds me of the front bag of my backpack -- a lot of empty things and receipts, too!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Gosh, I have way too many receipts!! I totally relate to your handbag! (Also, LOVE the picture from your previous post..so beautiful!)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I loved reading about the contents of your handbag, because mine would not be too different. Am almost scared to look into my bag, because I know I once put in a packet of sewing pins that spilled its contents inside the bag- still not got down to taking them out.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I certainly would not dare, luckily not the sort of thing I would blog about either. However I loved reading yours:)

  43. Hi Talli,
I downsized to a small purse so this wouldn't happen to me, yet still it does, it has developed secret pockets and hidden zippers and an endless bottom, like Mary Poppins. I shudder at what can be pulled out of my tiny purse.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm with you on 4. Why are they called MEMORY sticks if we can't remember what's on them?!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wow, that's quite the bag! I wish I could root through mine and discover all sorts of treasures (or not-so-treasure-y stuff), but sadly, my OCD ensures that I clear out my bag every time I take it out so that there's never anything unnecessary in it.

Great post, I love your Ten for Tuesdays!
