Ten For Tuesday: My Favourite Books

The rain is driving down outside, so what better way to get through a hideous day than to think about curling up, all cozy, with your favourite books?

Here are 10 of mine (in no particular order):

1. The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I deliberately didn't watch the film because I couldn't stand to sully the memory of this wonderfully written book. The end makes me sob every time I read it.

2. We Need to Talk about Kevin by Lional Shriver. This is a book that grabs you by the throat and won't let you go. It's anything but a cozy and comforting read, but if you're looking for 'gripping' (ay! a cliché rears its ugly head!), then this is it.

3. A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle. I love France, and this former journalist paints such lovely picture with words that you can't help read on.

4. Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. Falling in love with your best friend's fiancé. Need I say more?

5. The Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella. Clothes, fashion, fun - and set in New York and London. Brilliant!

6. Almost French by Sarah Turnbull. The true story of an Australian girl in love, in Paris. Sigh.

7. The Lovely Bones by Alice Seybold. Probably needs no further explanation!

8. What was Lost by Catherine O'Flynn. Touching tale about a small girl lost in a big, big mall - and world.

9. The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger. Because you have to love the sneak peek into the world of fashion journalism!

10. Running for the Hills by Horatio Clare. I don't know what it is about Wales and sheep farms, but I couldn't stop reading!

Just want to say thanks to Nicole, Anne, Mia, Sarah Jayne and Aching Hope for the wonderful awards which I'll be passing onto others this weekend! Thank you!

  2. Hi

Wow - you got the art of blurb writing down to a tee! One of my greatest writerly failing when doing my course is capturing what a story is about in 50 words or less and then failing miserably!

    So I'm in awe!

I'm very drawn to nos. 4&10...!!

    Take care

  3. ugh i have so many issues with the lovely bones. Le sigh (i even ranted about them on my blog once). BUT, that said, i LOVED the premise of it. Actually that's the only book on your list i've read. But i read speculative fiction almost exclusively, so that's not a shocker.
    Do you re-read your favs?

  4. Talli, these are GREAT pics. I love, love, love "Time Traveler's Wife" - beautiful piece of writing. And I love the Shopaholic series and The Devil Wears Prada. I haven't read "Something Borrowed" yet but I read another Emily Giffin book that was pretty good!

  6. Talli~ We have a lot of favorite books in common! A Year in Provence is one of my most favorite books ever. I read The Lovely Bones in one day and not a day has gone by since that I don't think of that haunting story. And Audrey Niffenegger -- what a genius! Did you read that The Time Traveller's Wife was turned down by more than 20 publishers before finally being picked up? I'm grateful for success stories like hers, aren't you?

Enjoy the rain (my favorite weather :)

  7. Audrey's TTW, is also made my top 10 list of favorite reads for 2009. (I didn't get around to reading it until last year, that's why it was on last year's list) I think I have a little crush on Henry.

  8. I so wanted to love The Time Traveler's Wife. Anything to do with time travel fascinates me, and I was addicted to the tv show, Quantum Leap, and the premise of this book seemed similar. However, I just couldn't get into it. Darn it. Maybe I'll give it another try sometime.

  9. Ellen - it's horrible, isn't it, but you can't put it down!

Old Kitty - I used to be in PR, sigh. I can't seem to escape!

Falen - I know, I've heard similar from others about 'The Lovely Bones' (and I have to say, I was not a fan of the ending). And yes, I re-read my favourites almost obsessively!

Julie - you have to read 'Something Borrowed'! It's her best one, I think.

Piedmont Writer - Read Kevin. Seriously, you'll feel like your heart is being ripped out.

Nicole - I didn't know that! Thanks so telling me! Yay for success stories.

Lola - I *so* had a crush on Henry. He's hot.

  11. I freakin' LOVE that shopaholic series. It's just SO well written, and that character--you can tell it was a little slice of her life when she wrote it. :)

  12. LOVED The Time Traveler's Wife! Others are new to me.

  13. I haven't read any of those! I'll have to check out at least one of them. I gravitate toward sci fi/fantasy, so my tastes are different.

  14. Nice! A rainy day is a good time to curl up with a book (if you don't have a drudgery-filled full time job like me, sigh). I love horror, so one of my favorite book series is Stephen King's Dark Tower series. It's amazing, and there's not a gorefest by any stretch of the imagination - more than anything, it's a strange fantasy tale. Thanks for sharing your favorites!

  16. Two of the books on your list I trashed on my Goodreads review-- couldn't stand them. Hoping the movies are better. I'm with you--anything by Kinsella is worth a read. Have you read Remember Me? It's a 5 star read.

  17. I haven't read any of those books. I know I should have, but I've been reading YA almost exclusively for over a year now. The books you have listed look great, so I'll have to check them out:)

  18. I've been meaning to read Time Traveler's Wife...gah! No! Now I have another book to read! *looks over at swaying stack of books to read* Though, I suppose that's a good thing.

    Thanks everyone for your comments!

  20. It's pouring rain here today too, and I have no books to read! I also enjoyed TTW, what a genius idea the author employed with it.

  21. Hi Talli,
You're right, nothing better than curling up with a good book when it's raining.
Intriguing list - I really enjoyed Kevin, and have been meaning to read What was Lost for a very long time.
    Very best,
    Megan

  22. I hadn't heard of most of these books. Added to Goodreads list! Curious about the time-traveler's wife one. Is it a sad ending? or just emotional?

  23. Okay, I'm writing these down. I haven't read a single one! Am I lame or what? Wait. Don't answer that. Thanks for the list. :)

  24. Just the title We Need to Talk about Kevin makes me want to read it. Thanks for the suggestions!

  26. I really try hard to not read things that will make me cry - I tend to sob in a rather embarrassing manner & have really vivid nightmares for days on end - so I haven't read some of the ones on your list!

This week my top couple of books are Hunger Games, LotR and anything by JD Robb. Might change next week :)
