Sweet Sunday: French Toast

I've just had this for breakfast so it seems very a propos to make it my Sweet Sunday spotlight! For me, bread is key to the making of good French toast. It needs to be slightly crispified (or stale). Mix the milk with eggs, put in a drop or two of vanilla extract alongside a generous sprinkling of cinnamon, then heat some butter in a pan and fry it up til it's golden!

Smother it all in rivers of glutinous maple syrup, and if you really want to be posh you can throw in a berry or two.

Could getting to paradise be any easier?

Happy Sunday!

  10. I haven't eaten French toast in years because of an unfortunate aftermath when I was a kid. But I do love the smell of it. And now you've made me even more hungry than I already was, so thanks for that. ;o)

  11. There's no way that's a breakfast. That's a dessert.

  12. I add a little sugar to my mixture before I batter my bread. Just makes it a little sweeter. Now I'm hungry. Think I'll have breakfast for lunch.

  13. Lovely, I just had chocolate cake and apple pie after dinner with cream and ice cream, so dont worry about going into training yet for your Dublin debut. P.s. my 13 yr old, thinks you look like Agness Deyn (sp?) and she is an expert on all things celebrity.

  14. Mason - I added some sugar too but forgot to write about it! Yay for sugary French toast!

    Fran - it's a breakfast. I assure you!

E Elle - What unfortunate aftermath? You can't leave us hanging!

Brigid - I've got the Agyness thing a few times! On my honeymoon in fact I had a crowd of Croatian teenages who followed me around the island shouting 'Agyness! Agyness!' I didn't want to let them down...

Never really happy with my french toast...it's okay, but I think I need to try another kind of bread, that's probably where I'm going wrong.

Made ham & cheese omelets this morning.

  19. This would normally have made me hungry, but I was prepared this time. I just ate a plate of waffles smothered in syrup. Not quite the same as French Toast, but close enough. ;-) I love making French Toast Sticks.

  24. Yum, pain perdu! Have you tried with brioche instead of bread? It's also wonderful with pain d'épices (kinda like cakey ginger bread) and crème anglaise.

  34. How delicious looking!! My daughter loves french toast, but not mine. This one I think she'd like--with that vanilla, cinnamon, and butter.

I just took a look at your web page and read about The Hating Game. I'll be waiting to hear that it's been released. It sounds like a very delightful read!!

  35. I'll add, use white bread to make it. Whole wheat bread does not make good French Toast.

  41. Mmmm....you should try mine someday.

I use eggs and instead of milk I use non-dairy french vanilla coffee creamer, cinnamon and just a slight bit of nutmeg. The coffee creamer makes it yum! Otherwise, use cream and add vanilla. (I've used that in a pinch) mmm mmm!

    Great post Talli!

  46. This is exactly right! It's so important to use a lot of cinnamon as it's so healthy! :)
Also, I think I use way more vanilla extract, but it's important to use even a drop or 2! I know what I'll be having for breakfast in a few days. Thanks for reminding me! :)

  47. The vanilla extract and syrup are key...not to mention a MOUTAIN of BUTTER!
