How Much Is Too Much?

Two very nice things happened to me recently: I got lovely blurbs from Irish bestselling author Colette Caddle as well as one of the biggest chick lit websites, Chick Lit Reviews. As I've bored you all to tears with, it is extremely barfable asking -- and then waiting -- for authors and reviewers to read your work. So when I heard back from both, my immediate response was to post the blurbs everywhere I could think of!

Then I wondered: if I post these kind words, will people think I'm bragging? Yes, I'm proud, excited and relieved, but I'd need a good ten courses of arrogance drugs to even come near the bragging factor -- that's how insecure I've been. I really just want to share the words with people I know will understand.

So I ask you: how much is too much? When do you feel an author crosses the line from acceptable promotion to just plain annoying?

(And if you're interested in what the blurbs said, go here)

  1. I'm totally interested in your promo stuff. you know why? Because you INTERACT with everyone. I know someone (not going to name them - not a fellow blogger btw), that just tweets, and FBs, stuff like "review of blah blah, to read click here'. etc. and never once actually 'talks' to anyone. I never see her comments on other people's promo either. I don't want to go and read that review. I'm not interested. Because I'm not interested in 'her'. We're interested in you, Talli, because you're interested in us. So I think what you're doing is totally normal and fine. Now off to read your rave reviews!!! :o)

  2. I say brag away! You've most definitely earned it!

  3. Jessica, that's a great point! I think it has to be a two-way street nowadays. Emily Giffin does this extremely well with her fans on her Facebook page. I could still do a lot more, but I do try. There definitely has to be interaction, you're so right.

    Meika, thank you! :)

  4. You earned it dudette!

Good luck and I'm hoping to read your book very soon!

  5. I love to hear your news. I don't find it bragging but exciting and inspirational :)

  6. I don't think it's bragging--you definitely deserve the chance to spread the word about yourself!

  7. everything Jess said. And we are also learning from you, you know?
    Post away

  8. I think it's very important to build yourself up at times like this. It's a big step; you're introducing your baby to the world. It's a great way to keep your nerves in check. I may do the same thing when my first book comes out.

  9. Never is my answer. It never annoys me. And that applies to all the writers I follow on Twitter and facebook plus people that have other achievements in life to be proud of. I don't see it as bragging. I love to hear people's good news. If people are annoyed then they are jealous or miserable gits ;)

    ReplyDelete
  10. There's nothing wrong with you sharing your good news! I love hearing stuff like this from authors when they interact with the writing community and their readers. And you have definitely taken the time to do that. Now there are some authors that I've followed on Twitter that ONLY did promo stuff. I'm not following them anymore.

  11. You're not bragging, you're sharing the lovely things that people are saying about your book, which is all part of the promotion and creating a pre-P-Day buzz. Like Jessica says, because you spend time interacting with your readers and other bloggers, nobody minds you doing your own promo, especially because you don't solely come online to do that. You're promoting and supporting others and just chatting with people, as well. You've got the right balance and it's exciting to follow you and your book's progress - it's inspiring to those of us who haven't got that far yet.

  12. Talli, I agree with Clarissa.
You've survived the gestation bit, you've had the swollen ankles (well, spreading arse) so you deserve this chance to show off your baby. We are like the chosen godmothers, all proud of you and your book.
Enjoy it and stop fretting, baby will be fine.

  13. I think you should post the rave reviews - definitely. It's of genuine interest to readers and followers. It's hard enough making headway as a writer so shout it from the rooftops I say!

    Not literally, obviously ...

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm not sure you could brag if your life depended on it! You have got to be the most modest person I know.

Love reading about what's involved in getting your book published and I'm learning loads. The blurbs are great and very well deserved :D

    ReplyDelete
  15. That photo is disgusting...

I think Jessica said it best - interaction is key. It's felt weird for me to mention stuff about my book. Usually I say something out of stunned amazement though.

You brag all you want, Talli!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Everyone is right. I especially liked Jessica's answer. It's not bragging because you give us all so much every day. It's sharing good news. There's a huge difference.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I totally agree with Jessica and everyone! You deserve the good words, Talli. You've worked hard on your novel, you've worked hard on promoting, and you've written well! Honestly, I don't find it bragging at all. You share with your readers and followers your true and honest feelings, including your fears. And that's what we love about you. You communicate with us and you do take the time to reply to comments, visit blogs and even send emails :)))

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think you have the right level of sharing your work with us.
I joined a writer's blog, and she has lost me as a follower. Daily x4 I got emails pushing her book. Another is driving me insane with her marketing blurb every two seconds.

You support me, I never hear from them, they are takers. You my dear are 'spot on'.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Nobody expects you to be able to talk to your readers constantly, or to reply to every single comment/tweet/message every time! As fellow bloggers, writers, readers, friends, we know you don't have tons of time on your hands (eek, none of us do!) so we totally understand it when you can't reply to something and we know we do it sometimes too. I know I could be doing more to interact with blog followers, etc, but sometimes I just don't have the time and I do the best I can.

But obviously, if you weren't so amazing about trying to keep up with replies and interacting as much as you do, I at least wouldn't be half as interested in you or half as excited about your promo stuff and book! The interaction makes us more than reader-writer or writer-writer, we become friends, so we totally root for you and get excited over all the great stuff that's happening!

So don't cut back on telling us stuff! I want to know!

I think I've confused myself now. This comment has gotten way too convoluted :-(

    ReplyDelete
  20. I second Jessica's words EXACTLY. You're too kind to be considered one of THOSE people Talli!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Go for it and post those reviews. All you will be doing is telling people of a few different opinions of your book, what’s wrong with that? It’s not like you are forcing people to buy your book. If you were going to random not even book related blogs and replying to random post with “I have a book out, buy my book” then that would be a low blow. Now you have to promote yourself, and how can you do it without getting the word out that your book promises to be good. There is nothing shameful about promoting your books and honestly, I can’t wait to buy it and would love to read those good reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Those are amazing, influential blurbs! Promotion is such a big part of writing these days, if I were you, I'd have them permanently listed in a blog or web site sidebar to showcase your work. Congratulations!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Because this is your debut novel, I'm giving you more leeway to gush and ooze and generally be excited. Your next novel, though...I won't be as forgiving. Because by then we'll all be a little sick of your good fortunes. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think as long as you're not mentioning it all the time - it doesn't become the be-all, end-all of your posts and comments - you'll be fine. (I know a couple authors who do that - not everything in life relates to your book! Stop with the commercials.)
Let people know, Talli. This is your once chance to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Talli - I don't think there is such a thing as too much. You certainly haven't overdone it. And, congrats on the GREAT reviews. Totally awesome!!! Yay!! =D

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks, everyone, for chiming in with your thoughts. It's super easy for an author to get tunnel vision, I think, when it comes to their books. I know I've certainly been guilty of that!

Also, I get the feeling there's quite a divide between what's acceptable in North America vs the UK. It could just be me, but I think Brits are a bit more reticent to do promo than North Americans.

    ReplyDelete
  27. As has already been said, the line is where there's no interaction on the part of the author.

    That's certainly not you, Talli.

And I'm with Alex on this one: that's a really revolting picture...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Congrats on the positive blurbs, you've definitely earned them! And I think that it's "never too much" for a writer to promote their work. It's what it's all about!

    ReplyDelete
  29. If you have the talent to write a book"Flaunt it" it's not boasting, I have a published book and I think the word that comes to mind is PRIDE. there is a difference.
    Good luck. Talli.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I say brag away! I'd love to hear the blurbs and celebrate with you! Congrats on getting them!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm thrilled to read your reviews etc and I say post away and tell anyone who'll listen. It's exciting that your book is about to be published. You go, girl. Brag away all you like.x

    ReplyDelete
  32. Promotion is so hard. I think that my being yourself and not constantly spamming or such is definitely the way to go. I've noticed that since I stopped promoting on yahoo groups and focused more on blogging and visiting other blogs, my book sales have actually gotten slightly better. Plus I don't have to actively promote! It's win-win! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I really have to agree with Jessica ... go ahead and post those reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I know what you mean, but I think it all comes down to 1) the way the author does it (you can tell when an author is bragging vs sharing good news they're excited about and 2) how often they do it. If every. single. day. it's all they do, it might be too much.

But you are sweet and sincere and have an awesome balance. I can't imagine you ever crossing the line into bragging. So please--SHARE! And huge congrats!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Talli,
That picture not only made me laugh but I'm craving a large order of McDonald's fries! Thanks!

There's a difference between bragging and promotion. You do promotion by accurately citing reviews. You also have a great sense of humor & that comes across in all your postings.

Besides, your readers want to know what's going on w/ your 1st novel. & you've earned yourself an excellent reputation because you take the time to visit so many of our blogs.

So keep on sharing your reviews! :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Very interesting question. I love hearing others' good news, and I definitely don't think you've hit into annoying bragging, but I think Jessica hit it on the head . . . you interact and are there for others. Makes a big difference.

You definitely deserve all your success!

    ReplyDelete
  37. That's so exciting! And i don't think it's bragging at all! They loved your work, and I think it's a good idea to share that news! That way others will have an idea of what to expect from your book.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm always happy to hear of another writer's successes. And you're so kind and giving, I want to hear even more so.

I'm off to check out the blurbs:)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh wow, fantastic blurbs! Congrats:)

This is the first time I checked out your website. Love the look. Great job!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think it's really awesome, Talli, and I super congratulate you! You really deserve it.

Hmm...I know what you mean though. I guess it's all about balancing and choosing what should be mentioned and what shouldn't. If it were me, I'd probably not say anything about smaller reviews. I'd make a bigger deal of any positive R&R I get from more famous companies and names, all the while staying modest by saying thanks, etc. I mean, that way, you're letting the public know that there are credible sources who truly enjoy your work but also show that you're genuine and appreciative, not arrogant. Plus, it's something you really deserve. :)

Erm..sorry for my rant. xD I hope that makes sense. Anyhow, KUDOS, Talli!!! You've come a long way.

  41. I'm one of those people who hates talking about themselves so I get where you are coming from, but in writing if you don't promote yourself no one else will do it either. Congrats on the reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think you've earned the right Talli. I know what you mean about not wanting to seem braggy, but again, you have worked so hard and now is your time to promote and be proud.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Reading all your opinions with interest!

Red Angel, I think you might be right. Perhaps celebrate the biggies.

    Terry, thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Everything Jessica says. You interact with people and you've built up a loyal following. As a result we all want to hear about what you're doing and that includes all the promotion and the blurbs - it's great. If we weren't interested we wouldn't read them but we are so we do. So promote away.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Me too. I agree with Jessica. I couldn't say it better. Although I'm going to try next week with a post on this very topic.

    ReplyDelete
  46. To answer honestly- I agree with the "as long as it's not all the time, every post" camp.

Thing is, if you have a blog and a book out, it's your right to promote it to your hearts content. Some people will read and read it and never tire of it. After awhile, for others of us it gets to be a bit much.

I don't get that feeling here, with you but I've had it other places. So I'd just also agree keep a conversation going- and a humble suggestion that maybe- as time goes on, as praise continues to come in (as it surely will) but the book has been out awhile, maybe put something in your sidebar with a heading of "new reviews/praise for..." or something. Even people as blind as me will see it, and yet it won't be in every actual post.

Just my 2 cents which with the current economy is worth a negative amount these days *laugh*.

Enjoy every moment of your success- you've worked for it. In the end, just share it however it feels best to you.

    hugs

  47. If you don't promote yourself, who else is going to do it?
    You are not annoying...

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree- you promo the right way- by interacting with people and treating them like people. You admit to your joys and woes and fears. That is perfect- so when it comes time to celebrate- you can never over do it.
    Be proud!! congrats!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't think it's bragging. I think it's excitement.
Bragging is a result arrogance. Excitement is a result of enthusiasm.
    You sound enthusiastic to me.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Enjoy the fact that people enjoy your novel, Talli!! Take care

  51. Aw, you could never be annoying. I say brag away. But honestly? Those two chub-a-wubs annoy my senses.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think you should do as much promo as you can fit in because The Hating Game is worth it! My review is coming to you before Dec 1st I promise. xo

  53. Hi Talli .. I think there are ways of doing things .. and you're out there promoting, but you're also connected with us .. so great ..

& if someone deserves credit - then let us all praise them .. because there's so much back-stabbing & we're not about that ..

So Brilliant News .. have a choccy vino weekend .. enjoy .. cheers Hilary

PS .. excellent reviews too ...

  54. I dont think you should worry about it. If I got a book published I'd be walking around everywhere I went with my book in my arms asking everyone how they are, and when they look at me funny and asked if they knew me i'd say i'm sure you have, i'm a famous writer you know, and then show them my picture on the sleeve.

i'm not as humble as you i dont think

    ReplyDelete
  55. You should be proud of your achievement, brag away all you like :-)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Congrats on the amazing blurbs! That's so exciting! I really don't see it as bragging because you've worked hard to get where you are and blurbs are meant to be shared with the world. I'd have them printed on a business card and hand them out to everyone I meet. Is that too much? :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. That's wonderful news!! I know I'd like to read them. I understand your concerns - some folks do come across as annoying and all they ever discuss is themselves. You are NOT one of those people!! Post away and let us share in the excitement! :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. First of all, you are a sweetie and never overbearing! We did have an author come and speak at our college and she was just too full of herself. It turned everyone off.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I dunno what the line is. It's probably different depending on your reader. At some point I get fatigue. But I haven't from you. It's not all you post about. And I've followed you for so long and am so happy and hoping for you that I love hearing the successes. May they keep on coming!

Aack! I gotta write that Amazon review!

    ReplyDelete
  60. It's good promotion to let your readers know when someone things your work is good. It's annoying when you tell your readers your work is good. That's the line for me.

Whenever I'm on a forum or blog and I see a writer talking about how they've always been a good writer and everyone has always told them their good - that annoys me. It's classic self absorption and it doesn't actually demonstrate any skill in writing or literature. Showing someone you're good instead of telling them is always the best bet.

  61. Talli, don't censor yourself when you're spreading good news. I'm so excited for you, and love reading about your journey. We all know that when it's our turn, you'll be there cheering us on. Brag, brag, and brag some more. You deserve it!

    ReplyDelete
  62. We all want to share in your good fortune, so I don't see it as too much. You're excited and in awe that others like your book - your baby - and we're excited for you!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I try to balance promoting with helpful tips writrs can use. Make it a win win situation. I do receive Facebook emails from people who constantly promote the same ol' same ol' stuff.

Hey, great timing as I wrote a similar blog.

Speaking of promoting, I'm going to help by making mention of your Decemeber 1st event on my blog next this week and next.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'd go ahead and let the world know! We're all so excited for you, Talli - you can't over-share with us! Those are fantastic reviews - congrats!!!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Congrats on these awesome blurbs! I don't see this as arrogant bragging at all. You connect with your readers on a personal level, and never come across as being "me, me, me" -- so don't sweat it. :) I'm happy for you!

    ReplyDelete
  66. This is such an interesting question & something I'm trying to juggle/figure out as well. The last thing I want to come off as is a braggart. However, I think if people are following you, they're genuinely interested in your author news, so I think sharing good news (like fab blurbs - congrats!) is something your followers WANT to know & you should feel free to share whenever & wherever.

    Congrats again!!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I read Jessica's response and absolutely positively agree with her assessment. I feel like I know you, so of course I care about what's going on with you.

I think it becomes too much when it's self promotion only.

You've got nothing to worry about!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think others have nailed it here when they say that self promotion only is what tips it over to bragging territory. I couldn't have worded that more torturously, but I'm sure you get what I mean! :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. That's awesome Talli! Really, nobody here thinks you are bragging! You are promoting your book-- a book people are saying good things about. You've got to get the word out!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I do agree with Jessica here, what a beautiful point.

Hope you have been well, Talli :)

    Been a while.

    ReplyDelete
  71. When you annoy me I will let you know. I think that self promotion is fine as long as it is a variation of what you have learned from your experiences and how you made it to where you are now.

I like hearing people talk about their success and will help promote them as much as possible. But it helps if they share their trials and tribulations along the way. :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. I honestly don't know, Talli. I think that's a question we all worry with. We want to share our news, good and bad, but we don't want to irritate anyone in the process. Follow your instincts. I think you're doing just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  73. When it comes to self promotion, there aren't really many limits, and since you've clearly put the working in creating this story, you deserve to have people recognise it. Though something that does occasionally get my gripe is when someone promos their [insert thing here] in places that are completely irrelevant;

"Hey, I like your blog about the state of the current Eastern European economic climate, by the way I've written a hard science fiction novel that is set on a planet with no atmosphere and the people there are at war with their supposed gods!"

That kind of thing I say is too much, but otherwise, go nuts! You deserve the kudos for your work, so let the people know!

    ReplyDelete
  74. If you don't brag, who will? Seriously, I don't think it is bragging; you're simply sharing good news with us.

I'd loved to read their comments!
