Ten for Tuesday: Bring Back the Eighties!

I'm a child of the Eighties and man oh man, did that decade rock the fashion world! Talking to my step-daughter yesterday about the fashions of yesteryear stirred up some long-lost memories of that golden time --- perfect for today's post!

1. Jelly shoes. I loved my baby-blue jelly shoes! The only problem was that the heel wasn't closed off so if you walked on gravel you'd get loads of little pebbles stuck inside. If you've ever worn a pair, you'll know what I mean.

2. Florescent socks. Florescent anything! I had a pair of bright yellow florescent socks. You could see me coming for miles.

3. Shoulder pads. In jumpers, blazers, T-shirts... basically, everything had shoulder pads. They're making a return here in London!

4. Pinstripe jeans. The darker the jeans the better, with a thin pinstripe running through. The height of cool.

5. Stirrup pants! Oh yeah! These make me laugh every time I think about them. I had a baby-blue (yes, I liked baby-blue) pair with a big seam running down the front.

6. Guess Jeans. If you had a pair of these along with a Benetton rugby shirt, I wanted to kill you. I longed for both.

7. Friendship pins. We used to wear these on the laces of our trainers.

8. Banana clip and bangs hairsprayed to within an inch of their life. I think the most important fashion accessory of the 80s was hairspray --the stronger the better. You'd banana clip your hair back, then curl half your bangs (fringe) up and then other half down. Fab!

9. Legwarmers. You can't talk about the 80s without mentioning leg-warmers. I had a pair in -- you guessed it -- baby blue!

10. Crimped hair. Being hair-obsessed, of course I had a crimping iron to make my hair wonderfully crimped. I shudder now just thinking about it!

What hideous fashions have you indulged in?

  1. And penny-loafers! LOL

Yes, I had the big hair too. =)

  2. Oh yes, penny loafers! I forgot about them.

  3. Although I was born in '79 I consider myself a child of the 80's and oh yes, Talli stirring some better-forgotten-memories there! In fact I was only remonstrating my sister the other day when I had to be her bridesmaid in '89 and she made me wear pink taffeta and have all my hair crimped and decorated with flowers. I looked like Poochie - remember him? Yet another 80's throwback.

  4. LOL. My son loves the music of the eighties and wishes he was around then.

I never could get my hair to go big enough.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I had my hair permed in the eighties. I look at the photos now and I think why, why why?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Oh the 80's when my hair was the fashion!! Didn't have to anything, just run a brush or comb through it.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hehehe, and do you remember the movies? St Elmo's Fire, The Breakfast Club (Still one of my all time fav's), Pretty in Pink...I could go on!

I remember getting a book on how to apply make up...my friend and I spent hours perfecting the rainbow (oh how I shudder at the thought!) look.

  8. I'm a child of the eighties too, the seventeen-eighties. ; j
As a young teen I went through a phase where I would wear period Japanese clothes in public a lot.
Never was in sync with my time. ; j

  9. I was 6 when the 80s ended so most of the fashions passed me by - but I remember my mother's huge shoulder pads, tight belts and bodywaved hair. At least she was fashionable!

The 90s were just so much less fun - flannel shirts and X-Worx jeans. Meh.

  10. Oh dear god, I've come out all hot and cold with shame at the memories. It's the legwarmers... wearing them with a rara skirt in my local town after seeing Bananarama wearing them. Clearly the rest of the population of my town hadn't seen them... oh, the stares I got!

  11. Big hair and shoulder pads - guilty :-(

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh yes! I was born in 1970 so the 80s were perfect for my teenage years.

Leg-warmers and ra-ra skirts, oversized Frankie says RELAX t-shirts, deeley boppers, Walkmans (men?!) the size of a bungalow... happy days!

    Thanks for reminding me!

  13. Tehe, shoulder pads, they were in everything weren't they!
I had a pink/grey 'fame' inspired outfit which I adored, complete with pink leggings! The banana clip, I loved it, never went out without hair in the banana clip, that's so funny, I'd forgotten about it! And the crimped hair, I didn't have a crimper for a while, so spent hours of an evening plaiting my hair into tiny little plaits so it would be crinkly next morning! Oh dear Oh dear.
Thanks Talli, I di love the 80's ~(especially Duran Duran)

  14. I was nine when the 80's ended so I bypassed the teen fashions, but I had Jelly shoes and a banana clip. I loved my pink, sparkly jelly shoes. :)

  15. I think anyone who was a teen in the eighties would be a fashion victim. But back then it was SO COOL.

I had a perm, too. When I look at photos, it was just brutal. What on earth was I thinking? I'm glad to hear I wasn't alone in this.

  16. I used to love leg warmers! The eighties were my favourite decade not least because of the fabulous music.

    CJ xx

    ReplyDelete
  17. ahhh, the memories! :-) the music was better than the fasion.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Mmm, maternity dresses were in for me 80,81.83. Then it was whatever fitted after that! Now the 70's...

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh my gosh I always crimped my hair! LOL geez, BAD BAD fashion sense. Eighties fashion reminds me of when kids start to experiment with colour coordination! ha!

  20. OMG! So many memories flodding back... I was guilty of #8! It took me forever to get ready in the morning! And I was so jealous of the girls in my class who had Spiral Perms. Now I'm happy my mom wouldn't let me have one!

    ReplyDelete
  21. You brought back some bad fashion choices for me. I had a ton of banana clips. I remember hairspraying the life out of my hair. When you took the banana clip out you could scrape the caked on hairspray off with your fingernail.
OMG--stirrup pants. I don't even want to go there. I had a black pair with the seam.
I had pink jelly shoes which left my feet to sweat like crazy.
Oh you brought back some memories.
    Too funny.

  22. Ra-ra skirts and space boppers!!!
    :-)

    Take care

  23. I'm afraid that even though I loved the 80's I wasn't old enough to be part of the fun stuff! I was the 90's kid where flannel was in, however I will say (and don't hate) I did own a few pair of guess jeans with my flannel shirts.

Oh and the things I grew up with, Polly Pockets, pogs, ferbies, the list is endless (Spice Girls) things I remember and some things I don't want to remember. I love the things that remind you of who you once were!

Thanks for the time machine Talli :)

  24. What a great romp down Memory Lane. Thanks for the memories...

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm still so eighties (except for the crimped hair).

    ReplyDelete
  26. I was young in the 80's too, but I remember the things we used to bunch our tee-shirts in off to the side. I had a parrot one--so awesome! Also many fuzzy fluorescent hair-ties. For my side-ponytails.

And jellies!!! I had a clear pair. They were so awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. Jelly shoes. - Oh yes, I remember these. Mine had sparkles inside the gel. Now we have Crocs.
    2. Florescent socks. - Yes again. Why!? I ask why? What did it match?
    3. Shoulder pads - groan.
    4. Pinstripe jeans. - I didn't wear these but I think I saw it in my favorite 80s movie Pretty in Pink!
    5. Stirrup pants! - What!? They don't exist anymore? I still wear mine. Just joking...ahem.
    6. Guess Jeans. - No. However, I did own a Benetton dress and all my friends were jealous when I wore it to school.
    7. Friendship pins. - I never had one, what does that mean?
    8. Banana clip and bangs hairsprayed to within an inch of their life. - hairspray in cans. Yes, how environmentally unfriendly we were.
    9. Legwarmers. - I had many.
    10. Crimped hair. Oh, my god! Yes, our hair looked like streamers!

  28. Love this! Such a fun post!

I think my fashion faux-pas decade was the nineties. I shudder sometimes to think of the stuff I wore. Admittedly, I was quite little for the first part of the nineties, so my mother dressed me... therefore, I can absolve myself of blame there... :-)

I had never ever heard of jelly shoes before today, and I'm giggling myself silly over the photo. I wouldn't be surprised if they reappear on the high street, given that they seem to be a cross between a ballet pump and a jelly flip flop.

  29. Sadly, I remember all of this. Remember Swatch Watches? You were supposed to have a million of those at $30.00 bucks a piece! Whoo!

You hit all of it on the head, Talli!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I indulged in all those! Oh, the memories ;)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hi Talli .. good memories - jelly shoes: I never owned a pair .. but they always looked kind of interesting .. to someone so unfashion conscious she beggars belief .. love your memories though and everyone's comments .. Hilary

  32. Ooh, I used to wear those black slinky cycling shorts with a big fluorescent stripe down the side. Awesome" And I also wore my blue suede Adidas Samba trainers everywhere!

    ReplyDelete
  33. You forgot the pale pink with black or pink and green color combos. Being a person who throws nothing away, I still have (and wear) my leg warmers (Michigan winter calls for them). And I DEFINITELY second that hairspray was the prime necessity. I can't believe for YEARS I curled every hair on my head.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Now those leg warmers come in handy when it's freezing weather and you're cold natured. LOL Wonder if I could still find a pair.

  35. OMG! I'm so laughing at all these things. Guilty as charged except for the jelly shoes and Bennetton. Hot feet and hot climate.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Fashion wise, well I wasn't so great. I've always hated the shoulder pads. What I did like was the Colors, so bright and so mixed. I had hairspray bangs...sometimes I still do ...grins...

    ReplyDelete
  37. LOL fashion...I'd have to go all the way back to the 60's! Twiggy and all that. What a hoot!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow, I'm feeling a bit old here with people way too young to have worn 80s fashion! :)

And yes - the jelly shoes did make your feet sweat. A small price to pay for the pleasure of wearing jelly shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh, and I forgot all about cycle shorts and Swatches! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  40. When I was young I was always trying to be a Cowboy, a Jedi and a Ninja, at the same time. I miss garbage pail kids.

    ReplyDelete
  41. But those Chuck Taylors ae here to stay!!!! I was 70's child all the way, baby ;--) But yeah the jellies and tapered jeans and...all of that mess!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Garbage pail kids! I forgot all about those!

I should clarify I was born in the seventies but most of my 'formative fashion years' were in the 80s! I'm quite happy I missed out on the bellbottoms and wide collars of the 70s.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I was born in 1970 (I'm old), and I still miss the 80's. It was fun as hell. The music, the campy movies, even the fashion...it was FUN. I owned plenty of Guess jeans, but my favorite were Z. Cavaricci's w/ the pleats in front. (yipes!)

They should totes bring banana clips back! ;)

    Love,
    Lola

  44. In the 1980s I was the winner of the 'Frumpiest Mother in the World' award. When I look at the pictures now, I just die.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Haha, I was born in the late eighties but I loved all of these trends!! The hair poof has made a come back!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I was born in the mid-80s, but I did wear a side-ponytail for quite some time!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Not telling as too many decades to cover, but as you Talli are the same era as my daughters, your list was fun to read and reminded me of my girls growing up in the eighties.

    ReplyDelete
  48. OMG, I had every single thing on your list! And don't forget the parachute pants and twister bead necklaces. Lol, what were we thinking?

    ReplyDelete
  49. OMG. I remember the jelly shoes! I had pink ones and they had silver sparkles in them. LOL. Though I hate to admit it, I also had the fabulous bouffant bang do as well. :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. The 80's died for a reason. Can we please leave it like that? :p

    ReplyDelete
  51. Guess I was lucky to avoid all that. Guys really aren't into fashion, though.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Shoulder pads were the ultimate weight-loss program, because with them you looked skinnier!
Remember painter pants? Didn't have to carry a comb in the back pocket anymore because it had a cute little side pocket.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Great memories! Loved my banana clips!

I think I had 5 or 6 different pairs of leg warmers - baby blue, pink, white, black, grey and red I think :) LOVED them!

I also had a weird obsession with overalls - especially my favourite teal pair!

    ReplyDelete
  54. OMG I forgot about the friendship pins until you mentioned them! But oh yeah I remember the rugby shirt phase. Whatever happened to Bennetton? My 15 year old daughter still loves Guess though. So cool that some things don't change.

    ReplyDelete
  55. some of these things took a long time to die!!!

ugh, how I hate shoulder pads!

We also had the tie-dyed shirts and the huge t-shirts with the little ring you put on them and pulled the shirt through.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Leg warmers--I'm short and they looked terrible on me and I loved them. And anybody remember Dorothy Hamill's wedge hairstyle? Took me an hour to wrestle my naturally curly hair into the wedge every morning, burning my scalp the whole time.

    Thanks Talli, for the memories!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I had a bright neon green ski jacket. And I wore my sunglasses at night.

  58. I have no idea what "crimped" hair is? Hmmmmmmm.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I just went back to the 80s & all those shoulder pads made me turn around & return to now. Oh, & those jelly shoes, not very comfortable but they were really inexpensive. Wonder why? :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Now that's what am talking about, am a child of the 80s too and i remember the shoulder pads so funny now yet then they were so fashionable, pinstripe jeans were my favorite with crimped hair..*Sigh* such lovely memories you bring to me sweety :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. I shudder thinking about anything I wore back then. I definitely had the stirrup pants and the leg warmers. Oh yeah, and the shoulder pads. Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  62. OMG, you totally took me back! I committed most of these atrocities, except the jelly shoes (pre-crocs?). Problem was I only adopted the hot trend AFTER it was over.

    Yeah, poor me.

    ReplyDelete
  63. the power shoulders and leg warmers...all in the same outfit. WOOOOO!!!! the 80s ruled ;)

    ReplyDelete
  64. I rocked the jelly shoes, florescent everything, stirrup pants, and crimped hair! Hahaha. Looking at old pictures is horrifying!

Fashion in the '80s was horrendous. I do not understand how it has made a comeback and that people are actually wearing that stuff again. So awful! They're going to regret it all over again in a few years!
