My Favourite American Things

Happy Fourth of July to all Americans everywhere!

In honour of the holiday, I've decided to post my favourite American things. Okay, so I'm not a citizen of the States, but I did live in Texas for three months, so that must count for something, right?

So, in no particular order, here we go!

1. New York City. The energy of this place is amazing. It's like being on uppers 24/7. Love it.

2. Target. Okay, need I say more?

3. Dry zones. Really makes you appreciate the wet zones! (Dry zone = area where you can't buy alcohol.)

4. New Orleans. Oh my, what a crazeeee place. Definitely has a vibe all its own. I love the back alleys of the French quarter.

5. Friendly people. Canadians are friendly, too, but Americans have the hospitality thing down pat.

6. Sonic. I LOVE Sonic milkshakes and burgers! Oh so good.

What are your favourite American things?

  1. Fenway Park...Boston in general...always feel homesick on the 4th...

    Great list.

  2. I love Super Bowl Sunday, which is usually near the end of January each year. American football championship game, beer, Buffalo wings, nachos, and the real reason many of us watch: the commercials!

  3. New York City, The Chesapeake Bay, The Smoky Mountains, large parking spaces, diners, sandy beaches, steak, and that goose bump thing that happens when I see a flag flying and hear the anthem sung.

  4. Mustang rally, four wheeling, Wendy's and Culvers! xx

  5. Great list - you left off Cape Cod and the Islands - the place to be on the Fourth ;-)

  8. Hi Talli - I had to laugh when I read "favourite" rather than the US spelling "favorite" As an American, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for recognizing Independence Day! Four of my favorite American things? The Grand Canyon (close to where I live), The Green Bay Packers, Mount Rainier, and the Episcopal Church...oh yeah...that's the Church of England!

  9. I've only been in America for a week but while there I enjoyed Sweet Tarts, banana Laffy Taffy, cheesecake, pancakes and the best pizza ever at a little place in Times Square.

Non-food wise, seeing Mary Poppins on Broadway with my oldest daughter was brilliant.

  10. The bleachers at Wrigley Field (go Cubs!), eating a hot dog!! :)

  11. Definitely New York for me too, Talli. LOVE the place, the whole buzz of it, the people, the various sights and sounds. I can still see me, My Mum, my two sisters and my eldest niece in a diner on Broadway after seeing a show. We had the biggest cocktails ever. I kid you not, they were HUGE. I shall have to dig out the photos. I also love the enthusiasm of Americans, some people say it's a little OTT at times, but we Brits can be sooooo reserved sometimes. I do prefer our chocolate though ;) Great post! :) x x

  12. I agree with everything! And I'm hereby making you an Honorary Texan :)

I'd also add San Antonio, Lake Tahoe, and the Florida Keys.

  13. Talli, although you were only here a few months, you're more American than you think. The fact that you were so able to point out what you love/like in America so easily shows that you undoubtedly "get it."

So, therefore, based upon that, I declare you "Official Unofficial American." If you're ever back this-a-way, I will treat you to a trip to Target and a Sonic burger. :)

    ...you know you wanna.... ;)

  14. You're so sweet! Thank you for wishing us a happy 4th! My favorite things about America are amber waves of grain and purple mountain majesty. Seriously! It's the land that I love, quite literally, and all that Americans do for it.

  15. Has to be my good Texan friends Geoff and Martina. Professional photographers, dropping everything to come over and take pics at my daughter's wedding in Dec. Love you guys!!

  16. If you ever go to the French Quarter again, look for Meilori's and ask for Victor. :-)

  17. You hit on a lot of good things. I would add the National Parks, which are awesome and so varied. Thanks for the good cheer. Sending some your way, too!

  18. I've always wanted to visit New Orleans, though to be fair a visit to most places in the US would be fine by me :)

  19. How about Las Vegas? It is so OTT!

  24. Movies, BBQ, Disney World, and most of all...freedom.

  25. Maria Sharapova--yes, I know. She's Russian but has a flat in Manhattan Beach, Caifornia! In N Out Burgers would be a huge improvement over Sonic. But I got a kick out of your list! Great post! :D)

  26. Yep. New York for me. My wife and I spent out honeymoon there and we're heading back in a couple of weeks.

  27. Great list, Talli - I've visted Canada more than America so it seems I have good things to yet experience!

  28. Now I'm craving a shake from Sonic (though Steak N Shake is amazing!)

I love too many things in America, however I don't think I truly appreciate it as much as you do because I've never NOT had it at my fingertips.

  29. I love NYC too! I agree, friendliness in America is awesome (having just come from a week's trip down south!). But, oh! We're getting Target up here! They're taking over some of the Zellers outlets...

  30. I've been to America once, a holiday at Disney in Florida so not sure it really counts as a true American holiday, lol. Too many tourists, not enough America, if you know what I mean!!

I did have a very good friend in another life called Tom. He lived in Baton Rouge and used to go to the Mardigras every year - one year he sent me over some beads that were thrown to him by a group of topless women on parade! Whenever New Orleans is mentioned, I immediately of Tom.

  32. New York City is at the top of my places to visit list. An amazing city!

  33. Had to laugh at #2 - I love that place as well. If ever one settles in my town I am in trouble. Hope you are feeling well.
    Enjoy your weekend! :)

  34. You're right about NYC - very exciting but I'm grateful to live in the suburbs just north of the city else I'm afraid I'd burn out. I wish I had a Sonic nearby, though! (Which I don't - never seen one in the NY metro area, though perhaps there are some upstate.)

  35. Bourbon whisky, Californian wine, IHOP, Roadside diners, Universal Studios Florida. The Kennedy Space Centre. The Gulf Coast Beaches. Yup, I do LOVE America!

  36. I giggled at #6. Even though I'm American and have been wanting to try Sonic for ages, I've never stopped there. Now it's absolutely on my must-try list.

Some of my favorite things are Epcot Center in Florida; Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado; Steak n' Shake burgers with an Orange Freeze; buffalo burgers; Wisconsin cheddar cheese; I could go on and on forever...

  37. You nailed it, NYC & New Orleans are just great. Yes, Target too :-)
