I've Got That Vomit Feeling

Happy Monday! Thank you loads for all the wonderful comments on Phillipa's post. If you'd like to keep up to date on her news, you can sign up for her newsletter on her website.

Right! Onto the vom.

Watching Willow Watts is now winging its way toward reviewers, and I gotta tell you, there's nothing worse than sending your baby out into the world. Sure, I've slaved away and done everything in my power to make it the best it can be, but deep down inside a little voice lurks, whispering it's horrible, terrible, and everyone will discover you're a fraud who can't write worth beans (cupcakes?). The month before your novel comes out is something I'd only wish upon an evil London looter, because it's a tense, angst-filled, nightmare-ridden time where I question over and over why the hell I'm doing this.

Of course you come out the other side when you realise you're doing this because you love writing, because you do actually want people to read what you've done, and there's nothing better than creating a world and characters who exist there.

But until then... vom.

And on that note, if you'd like to read the first chapter of Willow, you can do so here! :) And a little reminder that you can still sign up for the online launch party on 14th September, if you so desire. I promise it will be puke free.

  2. It's funny Talli, we all eagerly want to make it to the next step towards and of publication, but they all seem as terribly nervewracking as the last. I'm getting the idea now that it never stops, so I may as well just get used to it.

Wishing the so much happiness in your reviews. I'm looking forward to Willow!

  3. All the vomit talk and sending babies out to the world, I thought you were pregnant for a minute.

  6. Congrats on the new book Talli, I'm sure all will be well when the reviews come in.

  7. Congratulations on the book. Reviewers will love it. It seems like most steps in the publication process make us writers want to hurl: querying agents, sending in the full, waiting while your baby is out on submission with editors, etc.

    Wishing you great reviews.

  11. Congratulations on your new book. I am so behind in the times, don't have a kindle, but yeah!, my husband is getting me one for my birthday. I have been wanting to read The Hating Game, but I will have to wait until November to read both.

  12. Congratulations!! I can't wait until it comes out!
I'm editing my book now but I can't help realizing that I don't have much time left with it. It's kind of sad.
I'm sure your book will do very well!

  16. I just read the excerpt and it sounds absolutely great! What a brilliant idea...
Yes, I've been in dire vomit mood myself - but mine comes from being 'overly rejected' - I think I'm getting a syndrome - and wondering if I've wasted my life in pursuit of an empty dream - blah blah blah - now back to my revision...

  17. Sending chapters to crit buddies is unnerving enough - I can understand your feelings! Don't worry though - your writing is terrific! :)

  18. Oh, thank you so much, everyone! I really appreciate all the supportive comments because I have been absolutely in DIRE need for a bottle of wine today. Yes, a bottle!

Phillipa, I've emailed you off the loop. :)

Yay for bloggers! I heart you guys!

  19. You'll be fine; I'm sure this will be an even bigger success. I suspect it's like public speaking - some people just never get used to it and always have the shakes and nausea beforehand. And maybe that's a good sign - I worked in a bookstore which had author signings, and 1 or 2 were incredibly arrogant. The others were wonderful - and, tellingly, a little nervous. :-)

  20. I think there's a lot of vomit feeling in the entire process of writing! Yuck.

I can't wait for Willow to come out! :)

  21. You've dressed your baby appropriately and done all you can. Still, I understand. Congrats on birthing another one!

  24. I guess that vom feeling comes with the territory. So long as you're not a narcisstic megalomaniac, it'll be normal to feel this way!

  25. Congratulations, Talli, on the new book. Don't worry - I'm sure it'll fly! Good luck with all the reviews but I'm sure you won't need luck - it'll be fine anyway!

  26. Loved the first chapter! I'm looking forward to reading the book :)

  27. Aw, honey! I hope all goes smashingly well for you. And no up-chucking.

  28. Here I was thinking you were having morning sickness, lol!

I think it's always nerve wracking to have others read our work with a critical eye--people not part of our support system. But you've already proven you can tell a good story, Talli and I don't see that changing.

I'm looking forward to reading your latest, sweetie!

Now, take a deep breath, and here's a nice cupcake for you.

  29. At first I was envious of you, Talli. Now I am not so sure! :)

Relax, it is a wonderful book. Deep breath and a glass of wine. Then move onto another project. The only way to distract you from the horrors of waiting. X

    ReplyDelete
  30. Don't vomit! Take some stomach meds - or vodka - whatever works for you.

Scary sending something out into Big World for its first encounter with critical outsiders, but I bet it'll go down an absolute storm.

    Yay you!

  31. It will be okay, Talli. Just keep reminding yourself you've done this before and survived it. I got my copy of Willow this morning and can't wait to start reading. Now to get the kiddos down for a nap so I can.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It's such a tense period, right. I know it will get a good response, all the best.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If the rest of the book is as good as the first chapter, it'll definitely be a hit :o)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Good luck with your send-off, Talli! It'll go well, I just know it!

    ReplyDelete
  35. If the rest of the book is as good as the first chapter - and I'm sure it is, you'll be laughing:-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I feel for you hon! I'm still getting over the nausea myself. ;) Thank you for the link, I'm off to read it!!!

  37. hi miss talli! yikes! sounds sooo fun publishing out a book. ack! now im sending you a bunch of sick sacks and some sunshine and sharing out some words off one of my favorite reggae songs called 3 little birds... "doan worry 'bout a ting,'cause every lickle ting gonna be awright!" :)
    ...big hugs from lenny

  38. I tend to feel that way during all of the stages...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh darl'n, sip some tea, have a cookie and sit back.

Girl you are phenomenal! No matter how nerve wracking this writing business gets we must all remember how much fun the ride is...yes that 80 foot drop of sending it out is stomach churning but don't forget the wind in your hair and the view from the camel hump hills' as exhilarating when you hold the shiny new book with your name on the spine or that last sigh as you step out from the roller coaster car and you realize it was so worth it!

I cannot wait for Willow - breathe, it will be here soon enough and you will find yourself back in line ready to jump into another car for another whirlwind of awesome....

Oh and love how some people thought you were preggers... ;o)

  40. I've loved what I've read so far. Can't wait to read the rest now.

  41. Finally got a chance to start The Hating Game. Good so far.

Have some wine and relax, it'll all be okay!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Agh! I can't even imagine. I think reviews are always a mixed bag, however, and I know some authors don't EVEN READ THEM. Because then those snarky little barbed words are stuck in your head (if there are any!) and you can't shake 'em. However...I'd still be curious if I ever got to this point, and want to know what they say.

  43. I'm sure your book will be a huge success! I know it's hard, but try not to worry so much. Less stress = less mess! Julie

  48. Talli, you're such a wonderful writer and your sense of humor is fantastic - I hope the reviews go well, but even if they don't, please remember that. :) And congrats, congrats, CONGRATS on being courageous enough to send out your baby to the world. I haven't done it yet, but I'm sure it's terrifying.

  49. This is the time to start on your next book, so your mind is off what the reviewers will think, or take a trip to Fiji and forget about everything! I'm sure they will love it! :)

  50. So excited for the new book. I'd sign up for the launch party, but the littlest is having surgery that week.

    ReplyDelete
  55. no worries you! It's gonna do awesome!

  56. I like the title. It's very catchy and kinda rolls off the tongue. You're nervous but it's gotta be an exciting kind of nervousness, like going away to college or the first day on a job. I'll read the first chapter and then tell you how brilliant it is!

    ReplyDelete
  57. UGH! I can only imagine. I sent a new MS to agent a few weeks ago, and I've been all vom ever since. I keep waiting for her to *wake up* ... and send me the "it's not you, it's me" email... LOL! :D

    But YOU??? p'shaw. You're fantastic. And W3 looks awesome! Can't wait!!! :o) <3

    ReplyDelete
  58. It sounds like a pretty horrific couple of weeks, but it'll have been worth it once it gets out there and you start collecting those awesome reviews :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm off to read the first chapter right now.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Good luck. Take deep breaths. Mint tea is good for that vom... feeling so they say. Besides it's going to be fantastic and you have no reason to vom....
