Eye in the Sky

Thanks, everyone, for weighing in on Monday's post! I debated posting it, but it certainly provided an interesting discussion and lots of wine for thought.

Two lovely little bits of news to share with you: Chick Lit Love and The Alliterative Allomorph have both reviewed Willow. Yay! And almost 100 bloggers have now signed up for the Willow launch on 14th September. Thanks loads to everyone. There's still plenty of time to get your name down if you'd like to take part.

One of the things I struggled with while writing Willow is believability. Crazy things do happen in real life, and sometimes, reality can be much stranger than fiction. In fiction, though, we've all heard that things must happen for a reason.

In my novel, a YouTube viewer mistakes an image in a tourism video for Marilyn Monroe's ghost, and a village is suddenly overwhelmed as Marilyn fans flock to pay homage to where the icon was spotted. In the book, I worked in reasons for how such a thing occurs. But in real life, there aren't always explanations for strange internet phenomenons.

Take the video below, for example, which I first saw on the BBC! How on earth has this made the news in England, miles away from the actual occurrence? *shakes head*

There's nowt as queer as folk, as Willow's dad says. Happy Wednesday!

  5. Love the video. And I agree, truth is definitely stranger than fiction at times. The problem with fiction is that it even if you base your fiction on true events, it sounds fake.

  6. Awesome video, my lovely Dad also used to use that phrase.

  17. Re: believability-- Kim Karras over at Bibliophile wrote a really good post this week regarding this.

  18. I love that video--excellent cloud. And it's true in books we need reasons for things that in life we might not ever know the reasons for (or the reasons might be as simple as someone making a joke and another person taking them literally)

  19. Nature moves in mysterious ways! Yay for faces in clouds! LOL!

Well done with your reviews and soon to be blogfesting! Take care

  20. There's something to the saying, "reality is stranger than fiction." Mostly because we have to make our fiction so believable! Strange though that is... ;)

  21. Awesome video! :)
Cannot wait for the Willow ebook to come out! (My Kindle is ready and waiting.) It sounds like so much fun!

  22. How lovely you have a few nice reviews already! Woo! and yep, I've seen that amazing cloud video. So cool. Real life IS stranger than fiction sometimes.

  23. I'm so excited to read Watching Willow Watts! Yes, life is stranger than fiction. In my novel, Carpe Bead 'em, I based one of my characters on my own Aunt Grace. In the book she does a lot of crazy things that my real Aunt did in real life! Yes, she dyed a poodle she stole pink, she gave me all her old dishes, she climbed a flag pole, and she did have roaches....the funniest review I got was a reviewer said that my story was unbelievable so she gave it a one star. Hahaa!!!

    LOVE THE VIDEO!

  24. Hi Talli - thanks for the mention - was such a fab read! That video is insane... and if you can't go for a bit of escapist action in fiction, when can you? Like you said, true life is often WEIRD!

  25. I've always been a cloud watcher and I've seen some really strange formations made with light, shadow, and your imagination. My son and I watched a cloud that became a dragon, in seconds wings appeared and then seconds later just clouds. We love to watch cloud pics.

So, I think a video *ghost* is a great premise for a story.

  26. That is a pretty cool video! :) Reality is almost always stranger than fiction, I think. That's why I think real sanity only exists in novels. The rest of us are always just a little bit crazy. :)

  27. That's an awesome cloud! I'm not at all surprised Willow is getting good reviews! :)

  31. Thanks for the reminder, I've signed up now although I have no idea who I might be!

I'm thrilled for you at the interest I'm seeing all over the place for Willow. It's going to be great!

  32. The premise for your story sounds great! And it's true that real life is way stranger than fiction. That's one heck of an eerie cloud in the video! Hope I don't miss your book launch. My daughter is having her first baby and I'll be going to help out, so it all depends on how they're doing whether I get to visit anyone's blogs. I'm excited for you. These are good times for Talli Roland! Cheers!

  33. The video also didn't work for me. I'll try it again later. Looking forward to reading all the rave reviews about Willow! Julie

  34. What a fantastic story idea - can't wait to read it. Yes, truth is stranger than fiction, but as you said, only because we have to make fiction believable! Suspension of disbelief is a precarious thing, and we can't go toppling it, even if it's with real-life experiences. That's an amazing video :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Can't see the video (to do with flash player on my computer) but I love the idea about Marilyn Monroe.

    ReplyDelete
  36. That is amazing! And it's so true: reality IS so much stranger than fiction. And I love throwing in weird bits from real life into my stories - so it's maddening to then be told 'well this seems a tad unrealistic...' :-)

    Can't wait to read WILLOW!

    ReplyDelete
  37. That's the weird thing about writing fiction. You have to make it more believable than the truth otherwise no one will believe it! That new book of yours sounds brilliant.

  38. "Face...holy kripe!." I agree with the videotographer! That is amazing and glad he shared it. And I had so much fun reading Watching Willow Watts.

  39. that video is TOO COOL... I can't wait to read the book! Whee~ :D

  40. Wow! Princess Leia in the sky. I must now flock to Canada wearing a white robe with my hair wrapped in buns around my ears! :)

    Can a single person flock?

I have to say, in this day and age, I've had no problem with the believability of the reaction to the video in Willow (and how many prepositions can I use in one sentence?). Strange things do happen, and after some of the weird, cult followings that happen on this side of the pond every year, I'd believe a Marilyn sighting, no problem :)

  41. Congrats on the good reviews!

I always see elephants in the clouds? I wonder what that means.
