Kinetics... Or, Keep It Moving

We've all heard the saying 'just keep the ball rolling' yada yada yada, right? As clichéd as it is, it's definitely true. An object in motion tends to stay in motion, while an object at rest stays at rest. (See, I was paying attention in physics! Sort of.)

Well, the same holds true for writing. If you make it part of your daily routine, more often than not, you'll just sit down and do it. But once you break the habit and stop . . . it can be a killer to get back into it.

There are so many reasons to want to cease our scribbling: rejection, bad reviews, the downer that is self-doubt (I could go on, but this isn't meant to be a depressing post). But just keep going! Getting to the end is half the battle.

In other exciting news!

*I wandered the hallowed halls of the London Book Fair last night and met lots of great folk at the LBF Tweet Up. I had wine! And McDonald's!

*I'm way behind on blog comments due to a sore arm after falling off my bike in front of Buckingham Palace last Saturday. I tried to jump a curb. I have not jumped a curb since I was eight. Thousands of tourists were entertained!

*I'm meeting Laura of the Daily Dodo this afternoon, and she's going to do a VIDEO interview of me. I know: scary, right? Especially since I look like a lorry has run over my face (due to wine and McDonald's)!

Have a great Wednesday, everyone.

  2. You will be great....good to never feel older than eight on occasion!

  3. Glad you had fun at the book fair. Wine and McDonald's is an odd combination though.

  4. Keeping it moving is turning out to be harder than usual. Glad you are having fun, sorry it cost you your writing arm.

  5. Do you know how hilarious that sounds? Falling off your bike inf ront of a palace? :) Glad you're okay.

  6. I wish I could say I was riding a bike in front of Buckingham Palace. Was that before or after the wine?

  7. that's an imaginative 'k' - sorry you became part of the Buck House entertainment

  8. Good advice. I really need to get my writing routine back in gear.

  9. So sorry to hear about your arm - good on you for trying to curb jump, even if it did go a little awry! It's good for me to read this post. I've been trying to implement more of a schedule on myself this week. And it is so true, if you get out of the groove, it is so hard to get back into it again.

  10. Great tip. Keeping going with writing is a great tip.

And ouch to the arm. Although jumping up a curb would have been awesome if you'd pulled it off ;)

  11. I actually don't think it's true that it is impossible to start up again after a necessary hiatus. Sometimes you just need to know when to rest and when to start, again.

    Two cents.

  12. I so miss London...can't wait to see your video! Kudos for another great post.

  13. Sorry you fell off your bike. I'll bet the palace guards didn't bat an eye. I wonder what it would take to make them bat an eye?

  14. have a great wednesday Talli!

  15. Very true about keeping up with the writing. I know if I don't write something for at least 15 minutes a day, I feel like I'm hungover. And I don't drink anymore.

  16. Sorry about the arm, glad for the video and I agree with Alex; we don't mix McDonald's and wine here in the states :)

  17. Loved this post. I don't think I've ever jumped a curb! Hope your arm feels better.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh no! I hope your arm is already MUCH better. (I bet those crazy tourists thought you were a crazy Brit.)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well at least the tourists had a laugh. Hope you feel better soon. I definetely have trouble "getting the ball rolling" after I've been away from the keyboard for awhile.

  20. Sorry you hurt your arm, Talli. I did enjoy your post. I think it is so true. If I do not write every day, I get further away from it, and it is so much harder to start again.

  21. Good advice, Talli.
Falling off your bike outside Buck Palace, now there goes your wedding invite!
    Good luck with your interview.

  22. Good advice! Sorry about the bike incident. Yes, wine and McDonald's...not a good mix!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hope you feel better soon! Uhhhh...perhaps your curb-jumping days are at an end....

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with you on that! Once I skip my usual writing routine, it gets harder to stay in that routine later. The same goes for exercising too! That's why I always like getting these things out of the way in the morning. My semi-conscious state doesn't know what's going on and I can trick it into getting things done, LOL!

  25. Great advice. I wish I was there with you, even falling off a bike. I'm writing my first YA historical fiction based on the life of my mum in Birkenhead England during WWII. I can't afford the fair from the US to do more research but I have several english cousins that are helping me.

Glad I met you through the A-Z challenge.

  26. Aw, I hope your arm feels better!

    ReplyDelete
  27. wow. You have been a busy, busy lady!! :D Sorry for the hurt arm--were you royal wedding stalking? ;p Very cool about the LBF and the video interview! get well soon~ <3

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hmmm. It's a bit like exercising too. I can get into a routine of exercising every day but the minute I stop, that's it.

You jumped a kerb!?! Oh dear *shakes head sort of sympathetically* Hope it's better soon.

  29. Having to eat at mcdonalds makes me whine, that's kind of the same thing, right?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sorry you hurt your arm Talli. It's very true about keeping the ball rolling. Good luck at your interview. I'm sure you'll be very charming despite your injury. Julie

  31. Perhaps instead of falling over the curb, the curb deliberately came out of nowhere to make you fall?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Great and very timely advice for me.
Falling in front of Buckingham Palace, that is something you will never forget. Hope your arm feels better.
    Good luck with the interview.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I completely agree. Whenever I take a break, I find it so hard to get back to my routine.

    ReplyDelete
  34. This is so true, I was writing everyday & then other things took precidence and now I'm finding it hard to find that balance again! I will prevail though cause I need the creative release!

    Good luck on your interview:-)

Stop by and give K is for Karma a read:-)

  35. I hope your arm feels better!! And agreed - you just need to keep writing, and writing, and writing. :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Great advice and SO so true! Hope your arm feels better soon, and hope you had fun with the interview!

    ReplyDelete
  37. You are so right about making (and keeping) writing daily a habit. It is definitely difficult to get back into the swing of it if you break that habit!

Sorry to hear about your arm! Hope it feels better soon!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ow, hope your arm heals fast! And that is SO true about stopping and having it harder to get back into writing. I was reading (my "research") and doing critique-for-pay for 3 weeks, and FINALLY got back into revising my last WIP. Whew. It's too easy to have another day go by w/o writing, then another, then another...and I start getting antsy. ;o)

    Happy Wednesday!

  39. Ouch! Poor you, Talli! Hope your arm is soon right as rain.

I like the analogy and it's true. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  40. So you enjoyed the night then?!?

I get bogged down by the self doubt downer. Is wine my only recourse?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oww I hope your arm is OK, good luck with the video :-)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ouch. I'm waiting for the video of your fall to appear on youtube. Hehehe.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Love the rolling ball analogy.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wow, jumping a curb on a bike takes guts. I haven't even been on a bike since I was eight.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hi Talli,

Hope you arm gets better soon. We need you to write more books!

    ReplyDelete
  46. How fun that you two are meeting. Believe me, if I ever get to London Talli, I would love to have a glass of wine with you at the your local pub!

Laura seems really nice. i know you'll have a great time. Take care of yourself and STAY off those curbs.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm very good at not writing; much better than I am at actually writing, hehe. I'm a big procrastinator, but once I start the ball rolling I tend to run with it :D

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hi Talli - thank goodness the fall wasn't worse .. blinking silly thing to do - I agree .. been there done that too!

Book Fair .. must have been quite interesting in this climate - not control, nor weather - but Kindles, ebooks et al .. glad you enjoyed the vino .. and the yugh McDonalds!!

Looking forward to the video .. cheers Hilary

  49. I can attest to the momentum thing!

  50. Kinetics---good one. It's better to push forward and keep moving. Not writing is like slamming a moving bike tire into a static curb...oops! Sorry. ;) Hope you're healing nicely---surely the wine and McDonalds will help.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh Talli, hope your face has improved since. How much vino did you imbibe? I wish I'd been in front of Buck House when you fell, just so I' could help you up of course. Just thinking before I dropped by, I haven't see a word about the Royal Wedding anywhere on the blogosphere. Even Australia is featuring one week of programs in the lead up. We just can't snip those apron strings, but we love us a bit of royalty.

Wish Wills and Kate well if they happen to pop out while you're cycling by.

  52. Good luck on your interview! Sorry the wheels kept rolling re: your bike accident. Ow. Hope you get better soon!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Great post! Gotta keep rolling with the writing wagon. Hope your arm feels better soon. Nothing like having witnesses when you take a spectacular tumble. At least you can joke about it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ouch! I hope your arm feels better soon.

Staying in motion is definitely a good idea when it comes to writing. Not so much in front of Buckingham Palace.

    Jai

  55. Talli,
I hope your arm is better. Falling off a bike is no fun--having a large audience is even less fun. Imagine if a member of the Royal Family witnessed this?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Excellent writeup, Talli! Nice to come across you again...from someone else's site nonetheless.

    Kathy

  57. Congrats on the interview! That is awesome. So sorry to hear you bashed up your arm jumping the curb. Sometimes we are seized with the most bizarre impulses. :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Lovely read....and i'm trying so hard to start this habit...:)

    ReplyDelete
  59. love this post. Especially since my personal motto is, "Just Keep Writing"

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh, ow, your poor arm! (Excellent advice, but mostly I'm wincing for you.)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Sorry about your fall. Well at least it gave some tourists something to talk about when they get home I guess, but it's hard to write when you are sore.

I haven't been into London for about 20 years. I lived there for 15 years (Haringay, Morden, Streatham) but then moved to the USA for 15 years and now I am back home and in Southampton.

I am about ready to spend a few days in the capital again, but maybe out of tourist season.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hi, Talli! Hope you are doing better. No more jumping curbs, okay?
    : )

  63. 'tis true dear talli, once one stops writing for
a bit, it's hard to get inspired ...so after
reading a few blogs your included i'm back on
    track-
    good luck on the interview!
