Me and My Blankie

First off, massive thanks to everyone who signed up to my Take On Amazon Blogsplash. Over 110 bloggers signed up this weekend alone -- see the list here! I think I've managed to email everyone now. And thank you for not laughing when I told you my dream of making it on to the Kindle Bestseller list. Or my goal of 1000 bloggers! Why not think big, right? :) If enough people hear about what I'm trying to do, it might just happen.

In the past two years of my writing life, a constant companion has been by my side. I wish I could say it was a sprightly pup or a crazy kitten... but no, my constant companion is my blanket. In the summer it acts a pillow to cushion my ever-spreading bottom. In the winter, I wrap it around my legs to ward off drafts from our ancient sash windows.

A Primark special puchased for a fiver (or quite possibly less), it's faded, worn and definitely past its sell-by date. But I can't bear to get rid of it or even contemplate a fluffier version. It's been there through thick and thin and even when it's worn down to a scrap, I shan't forsake it.

What's your security blanket? And Happy Labour Day to my Canadian and American friends!

  2. Oh Talli, this reminds me of my husband's veryyyy old spanish blanket (he calls it 'spanish' for some reason), even though it's like a hundred years old, he still loves it and I also use it to keep me warm in the winter :)

  5. Your talisman sounds perfect and useful. I need Mozart! Must have Mozart playing gently in the background.

Congrats on your break the Amazon ceiling numbers so far.

  6. Sandy - Thank you, thank you!

Len - Spanish blanket sounds very exotic. Perhaps I should name mine!?

Summer - I like the thought of that blanket!

Claire - Teddies are the best.

Old Kitty - Baboon? What does Charlie think about that?

Ann - I'm a big Mozart fan too.

  7. Thanks for the Labor Day wishes. Anytime I don't have to get up at 3:00 am to be in the office by 4:00 am is a great day!
I think I have neglected this talisman thing. I must rectify this at once. I do have a Jack the Ripper figurine who stands behind a wall with all of his gear. I could set him before me while I write, but I fear I would spend too much time watching him, making certain that he wasn't watching me...or blinking.
    Take care,
    -Jimmy

  12. Mine is a feather pillow that is so mashed it barely makes a bump for my head. Perfect. I can smush it into any shape I want no matter what angle.

  13. argh I used to work in primark in my uni days - oh the horror!
I love my bracelets - i don't know why but i wear them on my right hand and when the husband mistakenly broke one he almost died from the guilt.

  16. My security blanket is the grumpy schnauzer. Cuddly (occasionally), and a great feet warmer when he lies across my feet.

  18. I have a Matalan cushion which props up my back as I write. I don't need a blankie as I have four cats to keep me warm.

  19. My security 'blanket' is a cup of ever increasingly milky tea!

love the bio - coffee and then wine - it's all about balance!

  20. The kids' great grandmother bought an afghan with teddy bears on it. It's worn and has loose threads everywhere - and I'll never get rid of it. :)

  24. Thanks to everyone who has signed up! I've sent you all emails! :) And there will be plenty o'reminders, not to fear.

I *so* wish I had a live animal (besides my husband). Sadly my flat is just too small so I'll have to content myself with blankie!

  25. A blankie - that is so sweet. I had to really think about what my security blanket is and decided I didn't really have one. And then I remembered Ninja. You're probably thinking, eh?

Ninja is a black and and white sock puppet I bought off etsy a couple of years back. He sits by my writers bureau and guards my manuscripts (love that word) diligently. Occasionally, when members of my family feel like winding me up, he goes on an excursion. Once, I received a photo at work showing he'd been kidnapped and a ransom was needed. Two packets of jammie dogers!

  26. I light a vanilla or lavender scented candle when I write. A similar comfort to a blankie I think - but not as warm!

  27. My Brainy Bear - a bear dressed in academic I-just-got-a-degree costume. He sits on my desk and encourages me that it's worth keeping my brain moving.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't have one! :( I write anywhere.

Yours sounds lovely and comforting though - it's fab when things become old favourites.

  31. Your follower count is HUGE! You'll reach your goal.

Oh, everyone needs a love object. I have my husband's old t-shirt from high school, my husband has a pillow case from childhood, and my kids still keep their baby blankets on their beds, though they're 12 and 8.

  32. Well, first things first. Publishing that picture of Linus has officially endeared your site even more to me, Talli. As a cartoonist, Peanuts is my favourite comic strip ever. :)

I don't have a security blanket, physically or figuratively... unless you count my lovely wife. In which case, she'd count as both! :P

  33. blankets are so comforting!!
I have cow slippers... They get filthy and fall apart and my husband has to search Sydney/internet for a new pair every two years or so ;)

  34. I'm afraid that only my mind has made it to each and every desk I've written at...I have dollies, and stuffed buddies and pictures of Marilyn Monroe but my old comfortable squishy mind is the only thing I've never lost...

  35. Either my iTouch or my iPad. (Hey, they go with me everywhere!)
And I think you blogsplash is a great idea. (Wish I'd thought of it!) Maybe I'll just see how many bloggers - outside of those hosting me on my virtual tour - will post my book cover or trailer the week my book comes out...

  36. Very true.
Every one has their own "something special" I suppose.

  40. Does coffee count as a security blanket? It's an expensive habit, but somehow drinking a combination of caffeine and mocha always gets me going to write.

  41. My mobile phone is my security blanket. Knowing I can contact anyone (or feeling like I can) is just about the only security I need :)

Can't wait for the Blogsplash, I'm off to pimp it on my blog now.

  43. I do, I do! I loved this post because I have my very own security blankie!

I must have been about two years old and my mum went away on holiday for a few weeks. I couldn't sleep because I missed her, so my aunt gave me one of her old T-shirts that smelt like her.

I still have it. It no longer smells like my mother, but is a soft, ragged, shapeless red mess. But I love it and wouldn't trade it in for anything. Still sleep with it.

(One time I thought I'd left it behind on holiday and would never get it back. I cried for days until it turned up in the wash. Ah, bliss.)

  44. I have a stuffed tiger from the World Wildlife Federation that's about 13 years old. His name is Eddie and I sleep with him - which means he has to ge everywhere with me!

  45. Hey, nothing like an economical blanket to make 1 feel better.

Good question about a security blanket. As long as there's a computer & a chair, I'm pretty much OK!

    ReplyDelete
  46. My security blanket is this one particular hat I wear (backwards) whenever I sit down to write. After all these years it probably has a "stanky" on it, but being without a sense of smell, who cares! :)

  47. I still have my blankie from when I was a baby! It's practically a rag now, and some of the baby toys on it (like a small mirror) have fallen off. So I have it folded and packed safely away. I kept it with me all the way through college, though, haha!!!
