When Good Things Happen to Good People

Ladies and gentlemen, the London heatwave continues (and by 'heatwave', I mean I'm not wearing layers). I'm sorry I haven't been my usual commenty self, but one thing I've learned in eight years of London is that when the sun shines, you must grab all the rays you can.

One of the things I love about blogland and the writing world in general is that we can share in each others' success. Sure, it's easy to get little pangs of jealousy time and again, but mostly, there's an overwhelming feeling of elation when a writer finally gets a book deal or an indie author hits their fifty-thousandth sale.

Last night, I was at a book launch for a debut novel by Liz Fenwick, a fellow member of the Romantic Novelists' Association. Glancing around the room packed full of published authors, it really was heart-warming to think we're all here to celebrate her success. And it's not just the real world: I see the same thing every day virtually, too.

Writing is a long, hard slog. Nothing is guaranteed -- except for anxiety and rejection. It's the people around us who lift us up when we need it, and who cry 'hurrah' when we make it.

Thank you all for being one of my 'people'!

Have a great Friday, and a fantastic, sun-filled, wine-soaked weekend.

  1. Awww, Talli, what a sweet post! It's nice to remember all this once in a while, and to have someone say it.

We're suffering heat here in Michigan too. And it's only May. The wine must be white and well chilled!

  2. The support and sharing is one of my favourite things about blogging too. I love hearing other people's good news!

Enjoy that sunshine, I will be doing the same thing this afternoon! :D

  3. Yay for the supportive writer community! And yay for sunshine--hope you get some more time to enjoy it!

  4. Happy Friday, Talli!

It feels so good to share in peoples' success. It's kind of weird that so few professions seem to encourage people to gather and celebrate career progression the way authors do. You don't see office clerks throwing a party when someone gets a raise or a promotion.

  7. So true. I don't know what I'd do without my writerly facebook friends support. Thank you for the kind words you always offer on my timeline when I'm feeling like an incompetent loser head who will never sort out the novel writing! ;)

  10. I second all that - the writing community has to be the BEST thing to be part of! And it was so lovely to see you last week, Talli - hope to see you at Conference too (where more wine will be drunk!).

  19. It's so lovely to hear of Liz's success. Enjoy your days in the sun, Talli - we get so little of it here (even less in Scotland!) that everyone is taking advantage of wearing some lighter clothes!

  20. Hi Talli. This is a very sweet post. You're lovely, always are.

It's all sunshine, too, in this part of the UK. Just got back home from the seaside. Love it. Hope it lasts. Keeping fingers crossed. xxx

  21. LOL heatwave! It's supposed to be 90F (32C) here this weekend, so I'll be headed to the swimming pool! Have a GREAT weekend, and thanks for the charming post.

  22. Most writers and authors are very supportive.

I think we'll be close to 90 degrees this weekend. I'm staying inside.

  23. You're a joy to know in the blogosphere, Talli! Have fun frolicking in the sunshine!

  24. Very true, Talli! Enjoy the sun! By next week, London will be back to its standard rain, rain, and more rain!

  25. I agree Talli. The best part about blogging has been feeling like I've found my peeps. It's nice not to feel so alone even when doing something that, by its very nature, requires massive amounts of alone time.

  26. You've always been so supportive of fellow writers, so you're a big part of it!

  27. YAY for sun in London! And I find this writing world is almost ALWAYS super supportive. The only exceptions I can think of are the rare cases where newbies who haven't put in their paces become millionnaires with mediocre books. (the sour grapes about the 'dreamed then wrote with apparently nary an edit, Twilight) Anyone you can see has worked hard for it, it is super easy to be happy for.

  28. I totally agree about the writing community. Thank you for being one of my people, too :)

    Enjoy your wonderful weekend!

  29. I wholeheartedly agree--this community is AMAZING. The journey may feel lonely at times, but all I need to do is fire up my blog feed and find any number of writer friends doing the same thing or offering support.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  32. I swear I've been on the biggest Talli Roland kick this week! I started with Miracle at the Museum of Broken Hearts. Then Build a Man. Now I've got Amazon recommending The Hating Game, and I don't think I can say no! LOL

  33. Great post. :) The writing community is awesome!

  37. I love going to support my writer friends in the moments in the sun. And I'm glad you're getting some literal sunshine. Enjoy.

  38. Talli, you are so right! I just re-launched one of my backlist books from 1990 as an ebook, and it wasn't easy! I could not have done it without my circle of writer friends!

  39. Hi Talli. You keep soaking up those rays my girl. I've visited London twice and don't think I've ever seen it sunny, snark, snark. I've been doing much the same, swanning around in the nearly-winter sunshine of 29 degrees c. Crazy. Delicious. See you when the sun stops shining, but yes, quickly, the writing community is great! I'm never jealous. I clap very loudly!

  41. Enjoy the sunshine, Talli! Run around the yard catching sun rays. If they don't last long, call me. I've got plenty of Texas sun to send your way. :)

  42. My comment disappeared! Well, it said basically, if you ever need more sun, just call me! I've got plenty of Texas sun to send ya. :))

  43. It is uplifting! And also good that we did have a sun soaked weekend, at long last! hope it continues for the Jubilee, another "getting together to celebrate" event.

It's so true, writing is a long hard slog but good company makes the journey much easier. I'm glad to be one of the people with you on yours.
