A Day in the Life

I've done these 'Day in a Life' things before, but I have to say it's a whole different story with a baby around (I know - duh). So, because the glamour quotient in my life is rather lacking these days, I thought I'd bore you with some minutiae. And to be honest, I really can't think of what else to blog about at the moment!

5 a.m. - Get up very quietly so as not to wake the baby (he's a very light sleeper in the morning). Tiptoe to the kitchen, cursing the creaking floorboards, and make a cup of coffee so strong the spoon stands up in it. Head to my desk (aka 'sofa'), boot up my computer, and furiously write.

6 a.m. - Baby TR wakes up! I work over his coos (aka 'cries') until they join together in one lengthy wail. Usually the coo to wail transition happens over a five-minute period, if I'm lucky. I bounce, play, walk, crawl and generally dust the floor with the length of my body.

7 - 9:30 a.m. - Feeding and yet more floor-dusting.

9:30 - 10:30 a.m. - Baby naps! I jam burnt toast down my throat and head back to my desk for more work.

10:30 - 1:30 p.m. - Feeding, floor dusting and a stroll to the shops where Baby TR and I terrorise the population of Kensington. We have a particular fondness for the lift in Boots.

1:30 - 3 p.m. - Baby naps! I lunge for whatever food is nearest, then make a break for my desk.

3 - 5 p.m. - Yet more feeding and floor dusting. I have a very clean floor.

5 p.m. - Mr TR's home! I hand over the baby and return to my desk.

6:30 p.m. - Baby TR's in bed and it's wine o'clock!

And there you have it! A day in the life of a writer/mum/floor duster.

What's the highlight of your day?

  1. Talli, I'm mum to a 9 month old and salute you for getting up to work at 5! Yours must sleep through the night (mine doesn't, therefore I sleep as long as possible!) Well done for being so disciplined x

    1. Hi Clair! I'm lucky that he's slept through since early on. If he didn't, the 5 a.m. start would be a very different story.

  3. Aww, sounds glamourous to me! But then, I haven't quite experienced how much time a baby takes up, yet...

  4. It looks like you've got a good routine and schedule down for you and baby. I'm glad you're getting in several hours of writing time and have time for wine o'clock, too! ;)

  8. I'm also impressed that you're up and rearing to go at 5 am! It's great that you adhere to a schedule. Little TR is lucky to have you, and he's a good boy for going to bed so early.

  9. Up at 5 am? You are a star! An exhausting day and the thing about growing babies is that perfect routine keeps changing as they get bigger. Waitl until the daytime naps stop, it's devastating.

  10. He sleeps throughout the night? Sweet! That matters so much.

  12. I remember those days of trying to write in between naps. And eating something other than Cheerios. Although I've never given up the 5am writing time. That's the best time for me.

One of these days, Baby TR will be reading these!

  14. What a busy day you have! My "little" one is a young adult, so now I just need to make sure work clothes are washed and foods he like are in the house. : )

  17. And that's why I love being a grandma, talli. I get to cuddle and snuggle and enjoy the little one's best moments...then hand her back over to her mom.

  18. My favourite moment of the day is in the evening, with the work day done, dinner and dishes out the way, and I get cosy on the couch. Then my cat will jump right on me and rub my face, then snuggle right up on my chest. We both purr.

  23. Talli: You always bring a smile and a laugh when I stop by here. I still get a thrill out of the name "Baby TR". I guess you could say I'm easily amused, but I enjoy your sense of humor, which always shines through! :)

  24. Such happy baby fun! And I greatly admire that you manage to write with all that! Although my baby is now a grown man, I still have such fond memories of those days (in spite of the fact that he didn't reliably sleep through the night until he was almost four years old. He was born a night owl. He still is one!)

  25. I'm cleaning out my reader today (obviously, since I'm quite late reading this), but I loved it. It's a short season...it feels like an eternity while you're in it though : ) Good for you for having the discipline to write while he sleeps. I'd likely cave and take a nap too! Enjoy your weekend!
