This past weekend, we took to High Street Kensington to buy gifts for our annual pilgrimage to Cairo, coming up this Saturday (eep!). And, like every year before, I steeled myself to spend a few hours browsing, comparing, discussing . . . thank God for hip flasks!
You see, Mr TR is a shopper at heart. He loves to trot into every shop and examine its contents, whether relevant or not. On the other hand, I prefer the 'in and out' method. Decide what you want before hand, swoop in, grab it, and get out (after paying, of course, ha!). The faster, the better. In fact, when I go shopping, sometimes I play a little game to see how fast I can pop to the shops and return home again. Dithering drives me insane.
I'm the hunter. He's the gatherer. Can you say role reversal?
What kind of shopper are you? And do you bring your hip flask along for the ride?
I'm a hunter too!
ReplyDeleteI hate wasting time in shops and malls. I usually decide what I want beforehand, check the catalogue online, go into the shop, buy it and get out. Ha! Hunters rock :o)
Vicky, hunters DO rock! Yay for hunters! I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. :)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a hunter! I generally know what I want and get it. If my husband comes, I make sure we visit a bar stool or two during our shopping trip!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh S and I are EXACTLY the same! lolol
ReplyDeleteWow, that is quite a roll reversal. I have wasted (Um, I mean enjoyed) many a Saturday afternoon with my wife, watching her touching and feeling everything in the store.
ReplyDeleteIf I MUST bring a hip flask - it better contain the finest whiskey.
ReplyDeleteOh Talli! You will beat me! I linger. I dither. I uhm and ahhh and then leave and return hours later only change my mind again. And that's just food shopping...!
Oh dear! LOL!
Oh wow - but your trip to Cairo!! How fabulous!!!
Take care
x
My husband is like you, walks in a shop buys something and back out.I on the other hand may see what I like straightaway but still have to look round every other shop just in case I see something better, and as you've guessed back to the first shop to buy what I first saw. Have a lovely holiday. You are lucky.
ReplyDeleteIf I take time browing I end up walking away with nothing and even more frustrated! I have to be in the mood to 'window shop', which isn't often.
ReplyDeleteHunters are fabulous. Though I'm blessed, my husband is a hunter too.
Hi Talli, I'm a hunter too! I don't like to "fanny about". If I know what I'm looking for, I'll just go and get it. When my mom was alive, bless her, she used to find something she liked, go to a load of other shops, to see if there was anything she liked more, and more often than not, go back to the first place and buy it!
ReplyDeleteI will confess also to being a "toucher"! I like to touch the fabrics as I walk past clothes - am I the only one to do that? I'm sure there must be more "touchers" out there. Or maybe it's just me!

I'm shopping with you! I'm a go out, shoot deer, bring home, feed family kind of shopper. I'm not out to admire the wildlife or view - I'm a man on a mission.
ReplyDeleteHunter! I am a morning shopper too. I can't be doing with afternoon shopping. DH is the opposite, he can stare a a tv cable for hours, and likes to shop in the afternoon. We compromise in the UK and go out for lunch. In Cyprus...we shop in the morning as the heat gets us in the PM...suits me. :D
ReplyDeleteI can last about 3 hours so I need to stay focused in order to get everything done! In other words, I don't enjoy it! Not really.
ReplyDeleteThat's hilarious. So the opposite of me. In fact, if I can avoid leaving the house to buy something, I will.
ReplyDeleteBig-time gatherer, here. I like to do a walk-through and get a look at everything, making mental notes on what I liked, then go back through with a buying-mindset: comparing prices, determining if I really like stuff, etc.
ReplyDeleteGrocery shopping, though, I'm a hunter. I have a list, I follow it, I'm done.
I only browse if I have enough money, otherwise I hunt stalk and locate. Just saved sixty dollars on a pair of boots the other day. ; )
ReplyDeleteHunter, through and through. I've got too much else to do than while away hours roaming stores. Just the thought of it bothers me. I'm with you, set my sights on my shopping prey ahead of time, plot my course, go in for the quick sell, done.
ReplyDeleteAt Christmas time I am a Hunter -- in and out, know what I want.
ReplyDeleteAny other time I'm a gatherer, just looking around.
LOL! I think Talli you are like my husband and I am more like Mr TR when it comes to shopping.I like to see what's on offer and browse. When I worked in town with an hour for lunch I was so conversant with all the shops I knew exactly where to find the right thing for each person and was always sent to get the cards and gifts for staff members. Can't do it now though.
ReplyDeleteI don't like to shop much anymore. To much temptation to buy things I can't afford. But when I do, I'm in and out. My husband likes to wander and browse. We don't do well together.
ReplyDeleteA trip to Cairo sounds.....scary and interesting. Especially now. I'm sure you will be reporting back on that. Where's that novel???
Lol! I have the giggles about the picture. :-) I am both! Sometimes I hunt and sometimes I gather. If it is the mall - hunter for sure. Boutique shops - definitely gather. Happy Monday, Talli! Thanks for the chuckle to kick start my day.
ReplyDeleteIt's like that in my house too. I'm an in-and-out girl and my husband likes to spend time shopping.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I do bring my Kindle Fire along so I can lean and read. Wifey can take her freakin' time now because I have an ereader! Hip flask .... hmmmmm.
ReplyDeleteI'm a gatherer, especially in book stores and grocery stores. Let's go up and down every aisle... MJ is the same way, at least in stores that interest him (including hardware stores. yuck). But that's okay... we have fun grocery shopping together, even if it's not a very efficient process.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy shopping, but only for like two hours at a time, max! And I like those two hours shopping expeditions to be spaced quite far apart! I always end up super exhausted when I shop with my sister because she can go for HOOOOUUURS! (Yup, then I need a hip flask!)
ReplyDeleteHave fun in Cairo!
xx Rachel
P.S. When did BUILD A MAN get a new cover? I missed that! Looks fantastic!
I live way out in the sticks and don't get out much, so when I do I'd probably drive you made with my looking at everything first and dithering and then looking at it all again.
ReplyDeleteI do have a portable cocktail cabinet though. Little bag with two glasses, shaker, and even leather coasters and olive sticks. Mostly use it on the beach, but taking it shopping is a really nice thought. Martini in Markies!
I'm both, depending on what I'm shopping for and how much time I have.
ReplyDeleteDuring the holidays, I'm 100% hunter though.
I really don't like shopping--it's so exhausting! So I'm definitely more of a hunter. :)
ReplyDeleteI am a list shopper, in and out, I treat it as a mission:)
ReplyDeleteIf I am on holidays, I would become more like Mr TR:)
oh, I'm the total in and out person, too. I HATE shopping. It literally gives me a headache. I have friends who are professional shoppers, and they're always getting great deals and they know where to find things at the best price... it makes me wish I were more like that. But the reality is, in and out. :D LOL!
ReplyDeleteHey, have fun in Cairo! Be safe~ <3
Definitely no hip flask here Tallie :-)
ReplyDeleteI am not big on shopping in general, but when I shop I like to browse, try things on, take my time.
It depends on my mood. Sometimes I don't mind taking my time shopping - especially in book stores. Other times, I want to be in and out.
ReplyDeleteI don't carry a flask, but I do need an energy boost from Starbucks to keep up with my mom when we're shopping, and she uses a walker! Julie
ReplyDeleteI'm just amazed he shops at all! Not my experience. That might be that because I'm a gatherer and like to look at all the irrelevant stuff, I've driven them all mad - and away.
ReplyDeleteI used to be a Gatherer, browsing around. Having four kids nixed that. I am totally a Hunter, now. In to get what I need/want and then I run out the door!
ReplyDeleteThat is a role reversal!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the notion of spending quite a bit of time shopping, lingering about. My brother, on the other hand, is a bullet point sort of shopper. "I've gotta go there, there, and there. Fifteen minutes, I'm done."
Have a good trip!
That's so funny! I'm a mix of both. It just depends on the day, the store, the money, and my mood. But My hubs is definitely a hunter type.
ReplyDeleteHave fun on your trip! Wow! Soon! Are you all ready!?
Most of the time I'm like you, get in, get what I want, get out. But sometimes, just sometimes, I like to browse and window-shop, particularly when I'm not looking for anything in particular. However, it never fails, there comes a point when I start to feel over-whelmed by all the stuff out there and retreat back into my crab shell.
ReplyDeleteThat's funny!
ReplyDeleteIf it's food, my husband is the hunter. But anything else and he's the gatherer. It's odd, but I'm a hunter for both. I get in and out of stores as fast as possible. I LOVE shopping online.
"Role reversal". See, I can say it!
ReplyDeleteI'm a gatherer, which means that i browse during the off-season, making note of the best berry patches, and then when the fruit is ripe (i.e. when it's time to go buy) I swoop in and grab, because I know where to swoop.
I can do both, depending on my mood and the amount of cash I have *lol* And providing it's 'gadgety' he can spend forever examining it ;p
ReplyDeleteDamsel in a Dirty Dress
Depends on the store and what I need. Clothing, groceries, accessories, necessities, etc: I'm a hunter. I get what I need and then I get out of there as quickly as possible.
ReplyDeleteIn bookstores, office supply stores, and arts and crafts stores, I'm definitely a gatherer. I browse and wander and let the awesome items seek me out!
If I actually have money to spend (which is rare), I'm willing to browse; it's fun to decide what I want to buy. But when I don't have any money or when I only have a little bit to spend, then the only place I'm willing to browse is the bookstore. At least there I can check out items without worrying if I look fat.
ReplyDeleteHunter. Totally. I hate shopping for any length of time.
ReplyDelete~JD
My husband and I can be like you two sometimes, depending on what we are looking for and what the budget allows at the moment. :) Have a fun trip!
ReplyDeleteI like to look for a little bit, and then I grow impatient and just want to be done with it. My biggest problem is finding my size, which varies between a 2 and a 4.
ReplyDeleteI don't particularly like shopping. I only do it when I have to.
ReplyDeleteOMG. You and Mr. TR sound like Live-In Handyman and me. He LOVES shopping. I'm the hunter.
ReplyDeleteLOL. My Hubs is the same. WHEN he shops, he likes to look at every model, decide what's the better deal. It's insane.
ReplyDeleteHave fun on your trip. Soooo jealous. =D
I'm a bit of both, depending how I'm feeling, but husband is straight in to find what he needs (or not) and out again.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your trip!
Oh this post made me laugh. I'm a hunter as well. I dated a gatherer once. It didn't go well, so I married a non-shopper. Hope you have a great time in Cairo.
ReplyDeleteI'm a solo shopper - and very much of the in and out school of thought. Have fun in Cairo!
ReplyDeleteLX
I'm a definite hunter .... unless I sniff out the discount aisle, in which case hold me back!
ReplyDeleteHope you have an awesome time in Cairo (remember, pics or it didn't happen!)
Ha, I'm a gatherer. A horrible wishy-washy gatherer that takes HOURS to decide what I want. It's actually pretty agonizing and I feel bad for anyone that comes with me. Which is why I prefer to go alone. That way I don't have to put anyone through the hell that is me trying to decide what to get.
ReplyDeleteMost of the time, I'm a hunter – in fact, wherever possible, I shop online!
ReplyDeleteHowever, stick me in a stationery or bookshop, and I could quite happily waste many hours of my life browsing… :)
I kind of assumed that all men were the hunters (get in, get out) and women the gatherers (shop around). It's definitely that way with my hubby and I, but sometimes he likes to browse as well. Just not as much as me! I like to comparison shop to make we're getting the best deal, whereas he doesn't care if something is a few dollars more expensive in the first shop.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, sometimes I want to leave a shop so we're not tempted to spend, but he wants to keep looking for stuff to buy!
I'm totally a gatherer, and my hubby is a hunter. I think it's good to have that balance, no matter which takes which role. ;)
ReplyDeleteIsn't that amusing? My hubby likes to shop, and I'd rather get my toenails yanked out.
ReplyDeleteHaving just finished The Hunger Games I think you should say you're the Katniss, he's the Peeta :)
ReplyDeleteMe, I'm a shopper! And a gatherer.
I'm totally a hunter - hate shopping! So does my hubby :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a hunter as well. I know what I want, I zip in and get out. My husband's the gatherer.
ReplyDeleteGood to see others like me here. I hate to shop, but when I do, I definitely take the hunter approach.
ReplyDeleteThe Mrs. loves browsing and taking her time--and I am perfectly content to hang with the kids for the day if she wants to go and do that.
I'm definitely a hunter. I'm really decisive, anything else drives me crazy.
ReplyDeleteHaven't brought a hip flask while shopping, but it does seem like a really good idea. Hmmmm.
Good luck with your shopping! It depends on my mood and my schedule - if I have the time, I like to browse. I'm that way even at the grocery store - my kids always joke that if I tell them we're stopping in to pick up one thing, we'll come home with twenty. And it's true, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteHave a good time shopping, I'm still dithering about getting an Ipad.
ReplyDeleteYvonne.
I'm just like you Talli!
ReplyDeleteIt's such a stereotype but I was totally expecting Mr TR to be the hunter and you the gatherer :-)
ReplyDeleteMy husband is a hunter and I'm a gatherer. We rarely shop together for this reason (though if a hip flask were involved, we might enjoy this more).
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful time in Cairo!
I used to be the one parking at one place and going from shop to shop looking at bargains before buying...but now I have more important-THE NET- waiting for me at home, so I've turned into the hunter! Go, Grab- and come home to THE NET!
ReplyDeleteThat's so funny, I imagined you being a trier on of multiple pairs of shoes (drinking complimentary wine) while Mr T tapped his foot impatiently! Have a great holiday!
ReplyDeleteI'm more like Mr. TR...in those stores I really like. Hmmmmmm...maybe I shouldn't be admitting this in public. :)
ReplyDeleteI am the same kind of shopper as you. I walk down the hall. Go in where I need to. Get what I need. Pay. Get out. I really hate to SHOP. My poor mom. Luckily my brother can handle hours searching everywhere for nothing in particular. Drives me insane. :)
ReplyDeletei'm a little bit of both. Usually i'm a hunter, but there are shopping trips where i purposely plan for a gathering type day. Those are scheduled events, though
ReplyDeleteHa, I love this! I am a big analyzer, so I would definitely drive you nuts! I like to take my time... but the hip flask sounds good, too.
ReplyDeleteIt's usually the other way around, isn't it. I'm also a fast shopper, my SO is like me and so our shopping is usually smooth sailing.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I love the role reversal :)
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, I used to be a gatherer when I was a kid shopping with my mom. But now that I'm grown, have kids and a crazy busy life, I can't stand wasting time gathering!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely role reversal! Haha! Husband likes to go in and then out...and I want to linger and browse!!!!
ReplyDeleteA Hunter through and through. I remember once dragging my ex-hubby who was loudly protesting, to the shops on Oxford Street and in the old Peter Robinson's at Oxford Circus he fainted right in the shop. Quelle drama!
ReplyDeleteHave a fab holiday.
Hi Talli .. oh I'm with you - Mr TR would drive me nutty! Hope you found what you both wanted .. and have a lovely weekend .. cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteI'm a strategic striker. I know what I want, and go only to the stores that might have it. I go in, look for it, find it (or leave) and move on. Snap!
ReplyDeleteHi Talli,
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower and I do enjoy reading your blog. Like you, I'm a hunter too. I go in, buy the stuff, then get out. Can't linger ...drives me nuts.
