Scaling the Mountain

Happy Monday, everyone! It's a sunny morning here in London (yay!), and I've managed to write 1,500 words of my new novel today (yay!) and, well, I'll be drinking wine tonight (double yay!).

Starting a new novel is always a little daunting. Although I've done extensive planning this time around and I feel I know my characters' motivations inside out, it's a bit like staring up a mountain you're about to scale. Plus, I've found that no matter how much I plan, things always change. A scene I thought would take ages to write turns out to be only half a chapter, or a new character jumps into the fray. While I like the surprises, sometimes I wish writing could just be straightforward! Or that I could bl**dy well stick to an outline!

Plus, there are often those bleating voices in my head constantly saying: 'This is boooooring! No-one will read this! This is booooooring!' I find eating chocolate helps to vanquish them.

I'm hoping to get this new novel out by autumn, although with a baby in the house, one never knows what each day brings. More details coming soon!

So this week, I'll be writing, writing, writing... hopefully.

How do you feel about beginning a new novel?

Have a great week!

  1. Well done for getting the words down.

When I start a new novel, I feel excited and so impatient to get going but it's the getting going I find the toughest. Once through that first chapter it gets a lot better.

    Happy writing, Talli!

  2. Very excited to hear you've started writing your next novel!

I love beginning a new novel, especially when my ideas are flowing and I'm (vaguely) sure about where I'm heading with my story.

  3. I'm so happy you're writing something new. I can only imagine the challenge when a little one is at home. At least he's not mobile... yet.

I love writing the beginning, but at some point, all those fears begin to hit me. Where will I go next? What if I run out of ideas? And so on.

Actually, I'm doing a rewrite of massive proportion so it's kind of like looking up at that mountain again.
Best to you on your new story. :D

  11. I love starting a new story! Of course, I don't plan, so starting a new novel is all about the thrill of learning about the characters and discovering where they want to go.
Editing is hard. It requires serious motivation... Where's my chocolate and wine?

  17. I love the first sparks of inspiration, when every idea feels fantastic and the characters are shiny and new. It's like meeting new friends for the first time. I try to outline, but find myself going nuts writing random scenes as they drop into my brain, for about 20,000 words or so. Then the hard work begins!

  18. Hi, Talli. I love that comment: Eating Chocolate helps to vanquish them!! Too funny. Due to my crazy work hours I only begin one writing project a year or so. #damnelevenhourdayjobs Enjoy that wine. *raises glass of white zin* Cheers, my friend.

  20. Hi Talli .. great that you're progressing up that mountain path - even with lobster baby floating around somewhere - bless his little soul! So pleased for you .. good luck with getting said ducks in order ... and most certainly enjoy the vino when the occasion arises .. Monday's gone - oh well!!

Cheers and it's still sunny down here and thankfully not as windy as yesterday - freezing it was! Especially down by the sea .. Hilary

  27. How I admire you for sticking to writing. I've been asked to write a book by well meaning people for years. For me the time is just not right. I did have some feedback years ago from a publisher who suggested working in tandem with another writer. Sort of like: "Michael Manning: A Life: Michael Manning with Talli Roland".:)
